I'd love to hear the rationale for Utley being safe. My best guess is that the assumption is that if the ump would've made no call originally because neither touched the base, Utley would've gotten back to the base? That seems pretty shitty though.

 

And the lack of reaction by all three announcers to that slide was really weird.

The thing is, Maddon would have protested the call at 2nd 100% of the time. It really is more of a fail of the Mets management than it is a blown call.

It sounds like they overturned the fact that the runner was out, which made him safe by default even though he never touched the base.
