Pirates have 4 at Coors Field, and I suspect they're going to have their struggles. Let's sweep and go into that series with the WC lead.

Why do you suspect they will have trouble? One of the worst teams in baseball and they are not an NL Central team

Regarding the first tweet, the Cubs just took 7 of 10 from the Cards and Pirates over two weeks. The only game they absolutely deserved to lose was the Pittsburgh game (trailed the whole way, got a bit lucky to even tie it up and after the first inning, were never better than 50-50 to win). According to Fangraphs, the Cubs were at 70.2% chance to win after La Stella's walk in today's game. And the other loss to St. Louis they were a 89.7% chance to win after the first out in the eighth.

Out of the 93 innings played in the 10 games, the Cubs led after 62 of them and were tied after 10 more. And out of the 21 innings they trailed, 17 of them came today and the Pittsburgh loss. They won four of the games handily and lost three 1-run games.

I know the couple losses were painful, but this was quite the impressive stretch.

Looks like the Pirates are lining up Cole, Liriano, and Burnett for our series. Currently showing Haren in Game 1. Is this accurate?

I see it as

Friday: Liriano vs Haren

Saturday Cole vs Lester

Sunday Burnett vs Hammel( but maybe Arrieta moves up to this spot because of the off day Thursday?)

Definitely an impressive stretch and I'm thrilled, just sucks a few key mistakes or strokes of misfortune (likely) cost us a chance to win the division.

Depending on what, if any, concerns there are about Arrieta's workload I would have to think there is a decent shot of that happening. If so, Arrieta would throw:

Tuesday vs. Milwaukee

Sunday v. Pittsburgh (normal rest)

Friday Oct 2nd vs Milwaukee (normal rest)

That would give him 4 days (normal rest) for the Wild Card game on Wednesday the 7th.

Do they have reservations about sending Arrieta out against the Pirates twice leading up to the likely wild card matchup?

As good as Jake has been, I don't think it matters.

I show it lining up like this.............

Gm# Date Opponent Score Starter Opp Starter
153 Fri 09/25 Pittsburgh - Haren Liriano
154 Sat 09/26 Pittsburgh - Lester Cole
155 Sun 09/27 Pittsburgh - Arrieta Happ

..... but we all know how fast things can change.

Also leaving Arrieta to face the Royals on next Monday does not make any sense, that means his next start would not be until October 3rd in Milwaukee and that isn't enough rest for the WC game, unless his start is skipped entirely but would then give him 8 days rest between starts.

I don't love the Pirates seeing Arrieta this much before the WC game, but I don't think we really have a ton of choices.

If there is consideration for skipping a start, I think it makes sense to do it here and then let him pitch that last weekend so he actually goes into the WC game with normal rest, and not too much rest.
