The Bears need OL's and every position on defense. They are therefore stuck with Cutler or whoever is on the scrap heap in free agency. You can't go spending picks on QB when your lines on both sides are awful, LB's are meh at best, and backfield is manned by a bunch of guys who belong on 2nd string or PS.

Uh you can absolutely spend picks on a QB if there is one worth it. Best thing- even if you need extra time to build up the line around it you can keep Cutler and protect the rookie for a year.

Not sure if any of the QBs will be worth a top 5 pick however, and if there stud OL or defenders that'd be great too.

My biggest gripe of the offseason was that I felt like Pace missed the short term opportunities while looking at the big picture. The Bears aren't really in a much better position going into 2016 as they were going into 2015. Hell, the best players (Forte and Jeffery) are both free agents and Bennett is likely going to further complain about not getting re-signed after he suffers thru another disasterous season. Still have the Cutler situation out there. And while Goldman and Amos look to be decent-to-good players, the Bears had the opportunity to really add a couple more important pieces to the future than a #2 WR (White, if you re-sign Jeffery), a center, and while I like him as a player; Langford was probably an unnecessary pick as Forte is still playing 85% of the time and you can find RBs a dime a dozen.

The one year contracts are nice, but they kinda reek of being unsure for a new GM. And they don't really solve any talent/depth issues for next year, other than give you more money to do it all over again. The only players added in the offseason that look like they will be around when the Bears are good again are Goldman, maybe Amos, maybe Langford, and McPhee as he's near the end of his contract.

But I think it was pretty important that the Bears add a young edge rusher (wanted Beasley), and either a young CB or OT to potentially challenge (then) Jennings and Mills as starters and eventually develop into such. You can still get a RB to play 5-7 snaps, and a redshirt C in the late rounds, rather than 3rd and 4th rounds.

When's the last time a top 5, or high 1st round QB didn't start the season opener?

Wherever the Bears end up picking, if they have their choice of Goff (QB), Stanley (OT), and Hargreaves (CB)....I'd literally flip coins to determine the pick.

Don't know, don't really care.

ETA - without a super thorough analysis I think it may be the same as the answer to the question, "when was the last time a team with a top 5 QB pick have a QB as close to as good or better than Jay Cutler"

The whole Steve McNair / Aaron Rodgers approach doesn't fly anymore. Bortles was an exception and it only lasted about 3 games.

The Bears desperately need playmakers on D, an OT (Bushrod blows and should be cut after this year), and a G. That's a lot of needs.

the defense really suffered from Cutler going down.

I think you have to start Fales next week because Claussen isn't any good. I mean, if you're trying to actually win, you want to see what you have in someone else, even if it's worse, because worse can't be much worse than what we saw on Sunday.

Cutler is this team's offense.

i should preface that by saying it's not that Jimmy Claussen isn't any good, because you'd have to be an NFL QB to actually be classified as good or bad. Jimmy isn't in that category.

Eh you could argue Claussen will look better with a full week of reps. He didn't exactly look terrible week 16 last year. Fales, Claussen, it doesn't matter. Maybe go the HS route and split snaps!

definitely

a lot of college programs run that way right? Don't tell them until the coin toss, given 'em alternating drives! Really ups the motivation/competition side of things and brings a whole new level of entertainment to a completely unentertaining team.

Also, when do they trade Forte?

Hadn't even thought of trading Forte.

Looks like the deadline is just after our 7th game. How bad of shape do we have to be in for Pace/Fox to give into such a white flag type move as trading Forte. Not sure we'd really get much for him, but he's likely gone anyways with his contract being up.

If they have any sense, they'd be shopping him right now. They won't get anything more than a 5th round pick or so for him, but that would be more beneficial to the future of this team than Forte playing out the string this year will be.

Also depends on if they'd get a compensatory pick for him.

Don't really think we'd get any comp picks unless we decide to be very inactive in FA.
