88 is generous. More like 86.

you know who else threw 86? Greg Maddux.

I'm not sure how this is relevant either.

because Dan Haren is not Greg Maddux and even in his forties Maddux didnt have an xFIP over four. Harens is 4.5.

Disagree. And Kyle is being a meatball. The Cubs haven't wavered from their long term approach. Why trade assets for what's likely at best a 1 game playoff type of season?

If Kyle is being a meatball your statement is being an imbecile. It is an incredibly stupid sentiment.

Nope. They're looking to keep their young prospects and allow them to develop with time. Why sell the farm for a rental or an older vet that has a 2-4 year shelf life? That's completely reasonable to me.

All of us and the FO (according to rumors) were hoping for a young controllable pitcher and not a rental or an older vet. That's what you "sell the farm for".

Despite his bad FiP, I like the fact Haren has been able to go 6 innings on average.. it helps keep the bullpen fresh.

Its gonna be up to the bats to wake up. If the kids get hot, no reason we couldnt average 4+ runs / game.. hoping they get hot.

or the other way to look at it is if he performs as his xfip suggests he won't last as long

We had to start Mark Clark because

-Mullholland was probably pitching the best but he pitched 8 innings his last 2 starts, his last start was Sunday (game 162), and he came on in relief in game 163

-Tapani pitched on the last friday of the season and would have been good to go for game 1 on normal rest but was brought in for an inning of relief in game 163

-Trachsel would have been the next choice but he started game 163

-Wood...I am not sure why he wasn't healthy enough to start game 1 but was able to start game 3. I remember there being a lot of talk about whether he should be shut down for the year or pitch in the playoffs and I don't think it was official that he would start game 3 until the day of the game.

So it was either Mark Clark or Mike [expletive] Morgan

Glenallen Hill and Gary Gaetti hit out of their minds for us, I didn't even realize.

Haren OPS against 1st, 2nd, and 3rd times through the order are .672, .608, and .934. We know Maddon is all about TTO, so while he can go deepish in games, I expect we'll see him get early pulls and perhaps be in a loose piggyback situation.

Edit: BTW, so far this year Haren during his first two times through the order has been essentially Cole Hamels (although very babip reliant).

so if he is solid first couple times around and the cubs have a decent lead joe takes his chances. if not he gets pulled. still better than wada/richards/beeler/roach.. in fact kinda like having another Kyle Hendricks

I am 100% okay with this deal.

I was a huge supporter of signing Edmonds, Berkman, Lackey, Liriano, etc. You guys all told me (basically unanimously) that I was a complete idiot.

My stance is that people who have done it before will always have at least some chance of regaining "it" and doing "it" again. As long as we don't overpay, I am generally always in favor of buy-low scenarios.

not sure if this was mentioned yet, but Haren leads baseball in lowest BABIP for the calendar year:

http://www.fangraphs.com/leaders.aspx?pos=all&stats=pit&lg=all&qual=y&type=8&season=2015&month=10&season1=2015&ind=0&team=0&rost=0&age=0&filter=&players=0&sort=12,a

top-10 for WHIP, also - the best part of this stat, is that Jon Lester now ranks worst during that timeframe amongst our starters

WHIP ranking:

#6: Jake Arrieta (1.00)

#9: Jason Hammel (1.03)

#10: Dan Haren (1.04)

#26: Kyle Hendricks (1.13)

#27: Jon Lester (1.13)

Now that the let down has worn off, Haren is exactly what we needed, and we gave up nothing we'll ever miss or even remember. He's the 5th starter we've been in need of ever since Wood lost his spot (a move that IMHO was a hasty one.) And I have a feeling that later this afternoon, we're all going to appreciate him that much more.
