Goldman/Ferguson/Ratliff is a gigantic line. Could be good. With Sutton and Jenkins rotating in, i may be optimistic.

Lot of height/length. Goldman and Ratliff and Jenkins are all 6'4". Ego is pretty close to 6'3". Washington is more depth at 6'4". Sutton apparently has been working out at the nose, and is up to 303 about what he was his last season at Arizona St. However, he played his best as a JR in college at about 280-285 as a 3-technique. Read good things about him in camp though. I'd still like 1 veteran brought in on the DL though. Again, they never replaced Ray McDonald, who was a projected starter. And though this group is promising, there is a 35 year old and a bunch of guys who either have no, very little, or bad experience on the line.

Yea with the current depth, we'll see a lot of Houston and McPhee playing down I think.

I think they feel comfortable with the DL group, because I think there will be a lot of times where there will only be 2 of them playing. The Bears will likely be in nickel 50-55% of the time at least. I don't know that Houston and McPhee will technically play down (hand in ground) but I think they'll play a lot of 2 DL with 4 LBs on the field in nickel. You're still going to have 4 pass rushers (2 DL, 2 OLBs vs. 3 DL, 1 OLB rushing, 1 in coverage). And word is Jared Allen is going to essentially be a DL. If he's in the game, he's going to be rushing the passer.

My concern is Ratliff is hurt (as he's been many times the last few years), the only other veteran is bad (like he was in Washington), and the young guys aren't good enough yet. 2 or 3 on the field, if they are injured and underachieving, it's a potential disaster.

Aren't the biggest percentage of teams using the 3-4? And if that is the case, wouldn't there be a few decent back up options floating around once roster cuts start taking place? Wasn't that how the Bears picked up Ratliff? And don't the Bears still have some cap space to add more depth, if necessary?

Filling major roles with other teams outcasts isn't ideal...

Ratliffe they picked up because he was coming off injury rehab.

And the Cowboys were pissed at him for how he handled it or something. It was more of a spiteful breakup IIRC.

Any surprises? Lamarr Houston as a backup seems surprising but I haven't been following camp closely.

Not many. Jacquizz Rogers ahead of Lankford, but that's probably a veteran presence type thing. Willie Young seems to be playing for a job and is the biggest victim of the 4-3 to 3-4 switch along with David Bass. AJ Cruz not even listed on the KR/PR chart is kind of odd. Also, Sherrick McManis listed very low on CB after initial praise in camp. See ya later, Daniel Thomas.

Vereen over Mundy and Shea ahead of Foster are notable, I'd say.

Neither are surprises if you've been following camp.

Mundy appears to be being groomed as a swing safety. Shea and Jones have been the #1 inside linebackers all camp and Shea has been getting lots of praise (yeah, i know. where have we heard that before?)

Gase on the other hand has to be gone if he does anything notable.

Maybe, but he was supposed to be this year, and everyone passed him up...

Maybe there's a reason that nobody wanted him for HC?

youth and success with Peyton is questioned until/unless you succeed with other qb

I thought SF did want him for HC and he turned them down because he didn't want Tomsula forced down his throat as DC.

That was the rumor.

Cutler looks like he's in really good shape

I tend to believe that the Bears will keep a lot of the young guys on the team, especially on defensive/special teams. I think people assume because they've heard of guys like Tracy Porter, Sam Acho, Jacquizz Rodgers, Ryan Mundy, Dante Rosario, Marc Mariani, etc. that they're going to be on the team, but none of them have any real guaranteed money coming to them that would make them a necessity on the roster. Granted, not all those guys will be cut, but when it's close, you gotta go with youth IMO.

It's worth noting that Alan Ball was ranked 4th in yards per cover snap by pff last season. he didn't quite have 300 coverage snaps, but he nearly did.
