Man I had missed that Lemming stuff as well. Gross.

That Trueblood kid sure seems like something. Have any pitchers complained at all about Schwarber's game calling? I've yet to see anything.

It's the difference in optics and actual effectiveness. Schwarber doesn't look super smooth back there all the time, and he's far from a finished product or a plus defender, but him looking awkward doesn't necessarily mean he's doing a bad job.

All they have to do is shake him off. Anyway, the game plan is established with the pitching coach, pitcher, and catcher before the game (with most teams). So, I guess the pitchers might get pissed about his receiving skills, but that's about it.

He's not a good defensive catcher to be sure, though, but neither is Montero when it comes to blocking pitches.

He's still a work in progress and he's learning the position. He's wearing a protective card on his left forearm(just like a QB) with info. about the pitchers and I assume some of the main batters for that night. Plus, he's looking into the dugout before each pitch. He hopped a few times left/right changing positions after calling a pitch and before it was made. Gotta believe he'll stop that soon.

I'll be more than happy with Mike Piazza back there, in my honest opinion

I've heard Piazza was pretty good at all aspects but controlling the running game. Given the era he played in, that'd make him an above average defensive catcher.

Pitchers aren't going to publicly complain about his game calling.

FWIW, they don't seem to hate him so far

Aren't his rates amongst the worst in MLB? Looks like he's about equal to Wellington Castillo so far.

Didn't mean to suggest that he was good. Just that he's not outlandishly bad and there are guys catching in the major leagues who are worse.

Right, it's to enough to hope for improvement to somewhere close to average. Hopefully some of the framing skills of Ross, Teagarden, and Montero rubs off on him.

Could the Cubs get anything for Coghlin? It's hard to imagine Schwarber out of the lineup or down to AAA once Montero gets back.

I'm not saying Schwarber can't stick at catcher but guys with his ability to hit typically get switched to a less demanding position eventually unless they're Johnny Bench which Schwarber likely isn't.

let's hope that teagarden isn't on the team long enough for any of his skills to rub off on schwarber.

His defense grades out very highly so far this year. Also, that hit off of Chapman gets him a temporary reprieve from complaints for me.

he's a terrible hitter who is the third catcher. he'll start, at most, once every five games and offers nothing with the bat or on the basepaths. carrying welington castillo was a liability, but at least he could come off the bench and give you a decent at bat.

it's basically a wasted roster spot, miraculous hit yesterday notwithstanding.

And it's basically ridiculous to think someone who has been able to sustain a fairly lengthy professional baseball career as a catcher can offer nothing to a young catcher who needs instruction.

yeah no kidding. what, do we need teagarden there to coach schwarber when ross is catching jon lester?

How many guys need to be coaching Schwarber at all times? What is Henry Blanco doing during all of this?

Schwarber is clearly in Sped. In addition to his teacher he has PT and OT.
