While its of minimal if any consequence, I wonder if Detroit would have some degree of interest in Mike Olt as a temporary fill in at 1B. Obviously, he's no replacement for Miguel Cabrera, and who is. But somebody will have to be for at least 6 weeks.

Adam Lind's a quick fix option. And I'm sure the Phillies have already called them about Howard. But either one would be costly for a 6 week fill in. Olt could probably be theirs for a few low level prospects.

Oh, that's all?

I'm really not sure what your angle is here. Is it Sarcastic "Oh, that's all," IE we'd never get a few low level prospects for him? Or serious "Oh, that's all," suggesting that he's worth more than a few low level prospects.

But the fact that, off the top of my head, Tony Campana, Jeff Baker, Scott Hairston, and Rafael Lopez, each brought back something of moderate intrigue suggests to me that Mike Olt could bring back two of those.

All of those players except for Lopez have demonstrated more value than Olt ever has, two of them significantly so, and were actually able to stay on the field. But other than that, sure, I guess he's somehow similar to the random collection of former Cubs players.

So, yes, it was an incredibly sarcastic "oh, that's all." The return for Lopez is about the best you could expect (PS: Manuel Rondon is not even remotely "intriguing.")

Not a trade rumor but

FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reports that the Cubs are expected to target Howie Kendrick over the offseason.

They'll have to free up the logjam on their infield first, which likely would involve trading Starling Castro. Rosenthal notes that the Dodgers could attempt to re-sign Kendrick, and the Yankees would be a possible landing spot, as well. Kendrick, who will turn 32 on Sunday, is batting .292/.342/.416 with seven homers and 36 RBI this season.

I like Kendrick and all but I'm not sure 2B is what should be prioritized.

If we're getting rid of Castro, and honestly it's hard to blame them if they did at this point, someone has to play 2B. They must really not believe in Alcantara.

I like Kendrick, if we've got enough to add him, a TOR starter, and have enough left over for a competent CF, we're going to be ridiculously good.

Our "concern" over the glut of middle infielders seems to have waned with the struggles of Alcantara, Castro, and Baez. Obviously Russell will be our SS in the near future, but his bat has been below the expectations (even factoring in his age).

He's really just a bit under his projections.

I'm not saying we should do this, but I'm not saying we shouldn't. Just wanna know what y'all think. And if the value is imbalanced in either direction, what could be added to make it work?

Soler for Reddick, Zobrist and Kazmir

Reddick is under control for next year, and probably worth a QO afterward. And any of the 3 could be worthy of a re-sign.

Soler could be a star in the long term, but the future COF picture could have Bryant and Schwarber in it, in addition to McKinney, other prospects, or future acquisitions.

For this year, it would seem to greatly strengthen our WS chances. We'll still have to face a virtual coin-flip wild card game, but these additions could mean a lot to winning that game and going farther. Or perhaps even just keeping our WC spot in the first place.

I'm not opposed to that idea, but if we are giving up someone like Soler I'd like to bring back a longer-term piece than just guys for 1-2 years. If we were to go that route, we should really go for it and do something like Soler, Torres, Zagunis, Alcantara and a couple others and try and get Gray in the deal instead of Kazmir.

Oh hell yeah - I would totally do that blockbuster if it was possible to get Gray.

Does anyone have any thoughts on whether the values line up?

The CCO tried breaking down what it'd cost to get Gray. Personally, I think they're light on the general return. I'd think Billy would want Schwarber, Javy, and a couple of other guys. Maybe Alcantara, Pierce Johnson, and an upside pitcher like 1 of Underwood/Sands/Steele/Cease.

If he'd give up Russell for a year and a half of Shark, he'd want an assload for a much better pitcher with much more team control.

Just a guess though obviously(and as much as I like Gray, I can't see myself pulling that trigger)
