David Ross vs lefties .154

Chris Coghlan vs lefties .143

Denorfia vs righties .395

Baxter vs righties .200

I HATE when managers overdo the matchups card.

Ross has to come in to the game anyway, and Coghlan is a nightmare against LHP. The Ross hate remains really weird.

What's not to love about a .185 hitter?

If you are going to have Herrera on your roster, you can't have Ross on your roster. If you're going to have a roster at all, Mike Baxter shouldn't be on it. The Cubs bench outside of Denorfia is so terrible.

His OPS+ is 58 so he's over half as good as the average hitter. Woo hoo

ross didn't have to come in. If the choice is let Montero run and stay in the game or let Ross bat in a crucial spot, I go the former and it's not even close

Do we not think Alcantara can be more effective than stupid Baxter? Is there something I'm missing here?

maybe alcantara is trade bait and they dont want to take the chance he struggles and becomes worthless?

scrabble has a career OPS against of like .800 against RH batters and .550 against LH batters. the sample sizes above aren't significant, given that ross has faced lefty pitching only 15 times this season.

You can't be serious

He's a backup catcher that hits LHP fine and plays good defense. I wish he wouldn't be Lester's personal caddy, but that's not up to him. In that situation(Coghlan due up, LHP on the mound, Ross has to enter the game next inning, no other RH bench options) he is 110% the right guy to be in the batter's box.

Without a doubt. This is where a Zobrist trade would make the Cubs so much better. Zobrist and Denorfia off the bench would make up for how bad Ross/Herrera is.

David Ross hits .150 against LHP.. Hit .228 against lefties last year.. On what planet is that even OK?

again, he has had 15 at bats against LHP this season. using his numbers this season against LHP is instructive of nothing.

Didn't someone just post he's hitting .154 against lefties? There's more to look at than BA and I'm too lazy to look it up but that's certainly not a good start.

When TT posts something I don't agree with I usually question my thinking but I don't understand this time. I mean Id rather him be our backup catcher than Koyie Hill but that's not saying much. And I don't understand the need for him to start 2 games a week

Edit: ok sample size on the stats vs lhp

David Ross has 15(16 now) plate appearances against LHP this year, we can comfortably ignore that. Last year he hit .228/.318/.491 against them and has a career OPS against LHP of about .750. This is far better than what we can expect from Coghlan, even more so when the pitcher himself has a huge platoon split.

Coghlan hit .247 with a .350 OBP against lefties last year. It was purely a matchups move and not a well-thought out one.
