I didn't realize the Cubs could have as many 3:05 starts as they want. I wonder what the advantages/disadvantages of 3:05 starts compared to 1:20 starts would be?

Advantage: Almost 2 hours extra sleep coming off road trips or night games/nights out for the players, fans can possibly leave work early instead of taking a PTO full/half day

Disadvantages: Shadows tend to be pretty bad in these 3:05 starts toward the end of the games most of the year, games going on/getting out during rush hour/early evening usually ends up in worse traffic for the neighborhood/city.

Maddon on no sac bunts by pitchers: ”Bunting is overrated.” Not bothered if pitchers strike out, to keep them off bases if bunt fails

Posted

Not so much a Maddon quote, but here's a Jayson Stark article on pitchers batting 8th, with a heavy focus on Joe Maddon and the Cubs.

http://espn.go.com/mlb/story/_/id/13004137/why-manager-joe-maddon-bats-pitcher-eighth-chicago-cubs-lineup

Well, maybe they should see this. It's the baseballmusings.com lineup analysis tool. And just for fun, we fed the Cubs' most common lineup into it this week -- with the pitcher hitting ninth and Russell eighth, and vice-versa -- just to see what it would tell us.

We even used Lester as the pitcher, since, at 0-for-61 lifetime, he owned the worst offensive numbers of any pitcher in history. And guess what? The simulator projected the Cubs would score 45 more runs this year with Lester in the 8-hole than they would if he were in the 9-hole.

Way to show up your team and manager. Castro was allegedly a leader and Lake followed his lead by being a punk.

haha you're like a fun little caricature

To be fair, Lake sucks and doesn't deserve to flip bats.

I'm generally with you, though.

Your opinion has changed my mind on Starlin Castro and I am firmly on your side now after that riveting hot take.

I like bat flips, slow trots, all that stuff.....Unfortunately, the guys PLAYING baseball are as meatbally as they come. Doing that kind of stuff could eventually get Rizzo or KB plunked. If it caused them to miss any time, then that [expletive] just isn't worth doing. I like it, but the risk is too great in my mind.

But it's likely not Junior they throw at. It's the guy coming into the box next.

And in some cases, the real [expletive] teams just throw at your best guys.

The next time he bats in front of Ross, can we pay him to do something stupid?

They don't usually go after the best guys unless the other team pitcher hit someone (usually their best guy). At least I can't remember the last time a pitcher decided to throw at the best hitter cuz someone else stood that pitcher up on a HR, they usually go after the same guy the next time he's at the plate if they decided to do so.

McCutchen was plunked in retaliation for the accidental HBP of Goldschmidt last year. Not the same as showboating but is example that some meatballs like their revenge served cold or something.
