Cool Bruce Levine article about Maddon's thought process on the two squeeze plays. A nice quote from Soler too.

The Maddon magic has its roots in all phases of the game, during the 40-year experience of this baseball lifer. Maddon saluted his friend and confidant, the late Don Zimmer, for his initiative in trying consecutive bunts.

“I mean, this is all Don Zimmer stuff,” Maddon said about using unexpected tactics. “This is all Zim. When I went to the Rays several years ago, Zim cornered me and I actually asked him about some things (outside the box) that he had used. Whenever these (quirky things) work, I think of Zim.”

I think I'm enjoying the Cardinal fan consternation over Maddon winning than I am Maddon actually winning.

Honestly. You'd think fans of a franchise that has won 2 titles in the last decade and makes the playoffs every single damn year would have the ability to put things like a largely meaningless award into perspective.

Since this is the quotable Joe Maddon thread, any good quotes from him winning the award yesterday? I didn't see much of anything.

The ones that can are also the ones who think Matheny sucks.

The baseball's best fans twitter account retweeted some reactions. Honestly most of them were fairly level headed. I get Matheny's case for MOY. I personally think Maddon's case is better but whatever, I don't think its a ridiculous argument. Anyways, the best reactions were the ones from twitter accounts where they previously made "Fire Matheny" tweets within the last year and then yesterday cried about him not getting MOY.

Huh. I thought a lot more of the vocal online Cardinals fans were unhappy with him. That surprises me that there'd be so many thinking he was good.

the dumb ones love him. the cardinals are great and he's a beloved former cardinal. what's not to like?

Well, that's why I said the "more of the vocal online fans;" what I've seen of them on their boards they seem to be much more critical of the team than the usual BFiB-type.

yeah but BFIB twitter isn't those types (even though they are obviously being vocal online)

I can't decide if it is cool or lame that this guy has Joe freaking Maddon in his phone as "Joe"

iphone text message screens don't show full names at the top.
