A month in and our boy is sporting a 36.4% K rate and a .734 OPS. Surely we should all panic and curl up into balls or something.

That .734 OPS comes on the back of a .412 BABIP, too. He's performing more like a .680 OPS hitter.

I'm not freaking out, but I've got an eyebrow of slight concern raised.

Young player has a stretch of struggling; film at 11.

It'll be OK. He's too pretty to fail.

The problem with the "young players struggling isn't uncommon" meme is that "young players failing permanently" also isn't uncommon.

I mean, I'm not going to get bogged down into some argument about the unquantifiable odds that Soler busts out and the subjective standards of when those odds would be worry-worthy.

If he keeps having a 38% whiff rate on his swings and a 36% K-rate, he'll be out of the league in a year or two. If he adjusts and starts making contact again, he'll be awesome again.

So if he stays bad, he won't make it, but if he gets better, he will.

To be fair, he's calling out the specific adjustment that needs to be made.

How many professional ABs has he had since leaving Cuba? How long was he not playing baseball between leaving Cuba and playing for the Cubs? He probably has some development left to do

Would you rather go on for 10 pages of alternating "But guys who did X like he did turned out awesome and that's the comparison that matters" and "No, guys who did Y like he did turned out awful and that's the comparison that matters"?

Yes, the dazzling insight of determining that he needs to stop swinging and missing and striking out so much.

They're all going to fail. Bryant. Soler. Russell. Rizzo's going to break something. Castro's going to jail. Vogelbach's going to eat Schwarber. What choice will we have but to lure Ryan Theriot and Milton Bradley out of retirement? And then Bradley's going to kill everyone. Meanwhile, The Cardinals are going to pull a bunch of superstars out of nowhere. It's going to be awful.

How about we just trade all the prospects at the deadline for the best veterans that will suck in a year.

Soler has a lower OWAR for the year than David Ross :banghead:

Soler just needs to move to the 7 spot so he can draw endless we know you kinda suck, but the pitcher is behind you, so just go to 1st walks.

i wish we'd just stop freaking out about how individual really young players are doing and just let the cycle of some being good while others suck and then then those guys are good while the others suck and whatever happen

and sometimes they might all suck (probably not too often given how many of them there are) and sometimes they might all be on fire but for most of the season it's going to be some guys struggling while some guys kill and that is enough to win a lot of games with.

all baseball players go through ups and downs and with rookies going back and forth through the adjustment battle with a new league it's probably even more pronounced

i nevertheless reserve the right to bitch about someone doing shitty if it's extreme enough for long enough

Agreed. I know a large part of it is a function of different people being concerned at different times, but it gets tiring to see every 5 or 10 game section analyzed for signs of doom.

Does Fangraphs' recent work arguing that peaks are younger and shorter than ever influence your thoughts on thisl?

There was no reason to worry about the rookies struggling before may started after we had a winning record.

Back around the beginning of the year we all expected these guys to go through periods of struggling.

its over emphasized due to the fact we have a chance this year...
