Drafttex was the idea that stud college hitters were so much more likely to at bare minimum be good major leaguers for many years that their value dwarfed #onceinageneration pitchers like prior that happen to come along every 5 years and always disappoint.

Drafting Bryant was a no brainer under this theory and his emergence is so much bigger and more important than priors, as well as tex.

agree with all that, but i still think prior was more highly regarded in 2002 than bryant is now. i could easily be wrong on that. i'm curious what guys like raisin and sneaky think.

you can't keep making these drafttex references and not tell me what it is

He is referring to Mark Teixeira who was drafted a few spots after Prior. He had one of the greatest college careers ever for a hitter.

i know who mark teixeira is. i was assuming "drafttex" is a reference to something jersey did in 2001 on cubs.com or something

goony was espn.com

Wieters had "Mauer with Power" (Pauer?) hype, and the hilarious PECOTA projection

a big reason for Bryant's hype is the outrageous ST performance and the Boras circus sideshow; he wasn't consensus #1 prospect on offseason lists

going off memory a little...

Harper

Strasburg

JD Drew

Prior

A-Rod

Wieters

Prince Fielder

Wood

Mauer

Chipper Jones

Teixeira

Justin Upton

Beckett

Gordon

Felix

Delgado

Ankiel

Delmon Young

Corey Patterson

Jay Bruce

Bryant slots somewhere in the middle/lower-third of that

Well, for comparison, Prior topped out at No. 2 on Baseball America's lists. Putting aside "screw pitchers," I'd consider them pretty comparable as prospects, but if you are making me pick one, I'd pick Bryant. With "screw pitchers" in the mix, Bryant easily.

I'm seem to recall Prior getting a decent amount of "we could be seeing one of the all-time greats"-hype a lot the whole way until he showed up.

Analysts are obviously really high on Bryant, and they should be because he's like pure cut right from the Golden Triangle, but for some reason Prior seemed more next level-hyped.

because dumb people believe in pitching prospects

Back then, power hitters were a dime a dozen so that put a premium on getting the few dominant pitchers available.

Only by people who don't understand huge value of college hitting studs over pitchers.

i'm sure you felt that way in 2002

he did

for the record, I was very excited about Prior.

I am 1000x more excited about Bryant. He was the no brainer draft selection and exactly what I would have wanted.

God i remember taking the day off to see priors first game, but a slugger is more exciting.

In recent memory, Strasburg, Harper, and Prior were on their own planet in terms of hype.

If we're going to count international prospects, there's Daisuke, Kosuke, Cespedes, Darvish, and before them, Chan Ho Park and Hideo Nomo.

And if you want to stretch it out to 25 years, there's Chipper Jones , Ken Griffey Jr. and sure thing hall of famer turned cautionary tale, Brien Taylor.
