If they keep playing well they'll certainly be in contention because it's likely they'll want to give the Big 10 a national seed, like they did with Indiana last year.

Their schedule hasn't been that bad so far with quality showings against Ok State and USF but they've played the easier part of their conf. schedule (Rutgers should be at least 2 of 3 as well).

 

They'll need strong performances against OSU and Nebraska as well as win the Tourney to get a top 8 national seed. Right now, they're my last #1 seed.

UVA's going to need to go on a very good streak to get in the tournament, but if they do, they are going to be a dangerous seed on the road, assuming Kirby is healthy. That said, the lineup's coming together (Coman's settling in, McCarthy's back), the pen looks to have enough pieces ahead of Sborz now ... and if Jones/Waddell can settle down (and Jones arguably pitched his best game of the year today), this UVA team starts to look like the team that people expected preseason - solid enough offense to go with good pitching. They put themselves in this hole ... but if they can sneak in with a healthy Kirby, they'll be scary for any team, anywhere.

Its crazy to think that Texas could replace their football, basketball, and now baseball coach all in about a 2 year span. I can't imagine Garrido staying on much longer at the rate they are going given his age. And a year being 1 inning away from the CWS final.

Looks like that lat strain was relatively serious for Nate Kirby. Out for 6-8 weeks. Damn ... but UVA is doing the smart thing for his future by getting him out.

 

Jones was excellent against the Pack, the bats are hitting, and the pen seems to have finally got it together. If UVA can get to the postseason ... they'll be a dangerous lower seed, but without Kirby, even with Jones "on", that's a big if, as Waddell has been inconsistent (that's putting it nicely ... still weird to think he was the Friday night starter 2 seasons ago ... he's been bad enough that I wonder if he comes back for a senior turn). I'm not even sure who the third starter for the weekend is going to be - Bettinger got work today ... Derek Casey is out after pitching well the last few times out. Adam Haseley, the CF, got a start a few days ago mid-week. Heck, the lineup's banged out - Gerstenmaier is out, Clement is out, LaPrise has been out for the year.

Illinois is now projecting to actually get a national seed. really need a good week in Columbus though, since its the first real team they played in about a month.

SEC Network recently aired an SEC Storied called "Thunder and Lightning" about the 1985 Mississippi State baseball team. Probably one of the more talented college baseball rosters to never win a title. They had Will Clark and Rafael Palmeiro and pitchers Jeff Brantley and Bobby Thigpen. Palmeiro is the only SEC player to ever win a triple crown and Brantley is tied for the most wins ever for an SEC pitcher. Interestingly, Thigpen was their cleanup hitter.

Illini fall behind 6-2 and 9-5 but refuse to ever stop scoring and end up winning 28-13 to win their 24th in a row. No midweek game, close the season next weekend at home vs. Nebraska. Got to figure they're due to drop one eventually.

 

I do like their odds if they somehow set the NCAA record for consecutive victories (currently 35).

Usually the B1G is a non-factor in baseball, also, but this year they've arguably got 5-6 regional teams.

Illinois hangs on to win 10-9 in an extremely sloppy game and ties a record with 20 straight B1G wins.

UCLA closer David Berg threw a perfect 10th and UCLA walked off in the bottom of the inning for the first no-hitter in school history.
