I don't get what umfan is on about. Presumably, if they believe he's the best guy, they will hire him. All these guys are replacement level. Hire the one with the best relationship with a good coach.

I'm not sure all these guys are replacement level. I'm sure there are some below replacement level. However very few guys in the league separate themselves as above replacement level in any significant way. Newsome might be the only one. Most the other top guys separate themselves mostly via QB or haven't done it long enough to quite crown them yet.

Pat Mannelly advocating Del Rio for Bears HC.

@mikecwright: Prob w/Del Rio is his window to interview has closed. Bears would have to wait until Denver's season ends. There is interest though.

One big question I have about Ballard. Was he at all involved in the search committee during the last HC search? He wasn't hired by KC until May of that offseason. Obviously Emery had full control of the hire, but you have to figure other executives had involvement with the process in some way. Would be interesting to know if he had any input or recommendations at the time.

RT @AlbertBreer: Per source, Kansas City's Chris Ballard has turned down the Jets' interview request.

Can we speculate that this means the Bears are zeroed in on him?

Maybe Ballard is only willing to leave for the Bears?

The amount of smoke here is suffocating. On the radio they were saying potential HC candidates reached out directly to Ballard before the Bears.

I'll be shocked if it doesn't happen at this point. I believe Pace turned down the interview too and we haven't heard about Gaine yet. We may only interview Ballard and Dawson.

So Boers and Bernstein are saying right now that the next GM gets to make the call on Cutler, but that the Bears ownership wants Marshall gone. That they're done with him.

I'm skeptical.

Brandon Marshall's extension hasn't even kicked in yet has it? Ugh. If they are just going to dump him, we'd better hear about some really damning locker room antics from him that hurt the team. Otherwise, there's no reason to get rid of him.

The more I listened to them, the more it seemed like it was more B&B each putting too much value on their own opinions. Boers specifically mentioned "his guy", but I'm still really skeptical of this one.

He did have that lockerroom meltdown early in the year, when people still thought the Bears could contend for the playoffs. It was reported that players did not take kindly to his stupidity.

At the end of the day I can accept them moving on from Marshall, but they better keep a lid on any leaks so they don't torpedo his value beforehand. Even with his antics he'd net at least a 3rd or 4th right now right?

Marshall is an idiot, but nothing new in the sports world. Don't get rid of him until you have a new GM/coach and he demonstrates his unwillingness to harness his emotions.

I'm fine with trading Marshall, but I'm still skeptical they are telling a new incoming GM to get rid of one of the most skilled players on the team. McCaskey and Phillips both specifically indicated that the GM would make personnel decisions.

If you're going to trade Marshall, now's the time - he still has some value. Someone like San Fran or Seattle could be interested.

I would think New England would be interested. WR is becoming an incredibly deep position in the league tho, idk what his trade market would be like/what his value would be.

He got two 3s when he was traded in his mid-to-late 20s, now he's in his early 30s, with a bigger contract. Maybe a 3rd.

Ok, sounds like Bernstein is basing this off of Hub Arkush's column about needing to get rid of Marshall. He doesn't think Hub would write that without knowing something.

B&B do have good sources, however one must keep in mind their vitriol towards Marshall and Cutler when listening.

His extension was pretty close to his old contract. He got a very slight pay raise. 9.3 mil in 2012/2013, 9.375 this year, and then 9.575, 9.975, and 10.375 for the next 3 years. Teams that trade for him has only 2015 as guaranteed (Marshall’s 2015 base salary becomes fully guaranteed if on the roster on the 3rd day of the 2015 League Year*) so he can be cut at any time after next year. Bears would be stuck with 5.6 mil dead money this year due to his signing bonus, but would gain 3.95 mil cap space. I think you could MAYBE get a late 2nd, but should realistically get a 3rd.

Whelp, the Saints director of player personnel turned down the chance to interview with the Jets for the GM job. Nobody wants that job!
