Assuming they go with Toub, I'd be interested in Childress as OC. How about Fangio (assuming no HC job comes his way) or Steve Spagnuolo as DC?

are kubiak and the denver guy the only offensive HC names we've been linked to?

Florio was apparently on the radio this morning, and thinks the Falcons could be the first team to hire a coach....and that it'll be Rex Ryan after his interview today.

That gig makes way more sense for him than the 49'ers, though Demitrioff isn't looking secure if they don't improve. I still think he belongs in Oakland, just because he seems like the kind of guy who coaches there. Then again, Atlanta once employed Jerry Glanville...

Reports this morning that the Bears are expected to interview Shanahan.

Does this logic make sense?

Former Bears special teams coach Dave Toub, who has been with the Chiefs the past two seasons, would be a very legitimate candidate for head coach — in Chicago or somewhere else.

Special teams coaches such as Toub are actually better qualified for head-coaching positions than many coordinators, because they work with offensive and defensive players, they have the toughest teaching job in the business and most of all, their job is about managing people — the toughest part of coaching. Most players on special teams units would rather be doing something else and it’s Toub’s job to get the most out of them — something he did in Chicago extremely well.

Unfortunately, nobody hires special teams coaches. Even John Harbaugh, a special teams coach for nine years with the Eagles, was moved to defensive backs coach in 2007 by Andy Reid to enhance his candidacy for a head-coaching job. And it worked. Toub doesn’t have that advantage.

If it is Toub, Childress and Spagnuolo are my two bets, based solely on previously coaching together and the idea that a first time head coach can be helped by guys with previous head coaching experience.

It is the logic that I have heard multiple times before with regards to hiring ST coaches.

A Spagnuolo coached D would certainly be fun to watch, if his Giants teams are any indication. Randy Gregory would look good working for him.

Mannelly says that he's talked to people that are in direct contact with Ballard, and that he "knows what he wants, and won't take the job if he doesn't get it".

It isn't. On the other hand I think ST coaches end up being the most vetted of candidates because no one is jumping out of their seat to hire a flash in the pan ST coach. On offense and defense the hot coordinators are often guys who have been doing it successfully for a very short time. As a ST guy you have to prove yourself over and over before people even consider giving you a chance.

So while you look around and see the relative success of ST coaches I'm not sure it's because they're somehow more qualified but just that they're ultimate survivors.

I wonder if this is personnel related. Doesn't want to be told he has to keep x or have to dump x.

Or just money/control related. I can't see control being an issue but maybe he doesn't want to report into Phillips either.

The good thing about the hire will be that Ballard already knows where this organization is inept, and if he takes the job that means something is being fixed before he even walks in the door.

Did call Ballard a "defensive guy", and thinks Todd Bowles will be a consideration because he's a "defensive guy". Also mentioned Darryl Bevell.

I think if you go the Toub route, he has to bring in guys like Morningwheg and Marinelli.

forgive me in advance, but i'll laugh for days if those are your two coordinators

@JasonLaCanfora: Been reporting on the mutual interest b/n Bears and Mike Shanahan for weeks, noting he will come in late to meet w/them after they hire GM

@JasonLaCanfora: Have heard much about the candidacy of KC personnel exec Chris Ballard with the Bears, who would likely be pro-Mike Shanahan himself...

@JasonLaCanfora: Mike Shanahan covets the opportunity to work again with Cutler as long noted. They remain close and believe they could thrive together

I've liked Fangio all the way back to his Stanford days. He's a 3-4 guy, though.

If this indicates Ballard isn't going to needlessly move on from Cutler I'm happy. The feeling is Toub may want to...

Would prefer Kubiak over Shannahan. I feel Shannahan will eventually fracture his relationship with any GM.
