We sure we love Ricky here in Chicago?

I'd rather sign Andrew Miller (or half of him or whatever) than pay Maddon what he would cost compared to Renteria.

And I really am not fond of spending money on relievers.

The main reason I'd love to get Maddon is that it likely signals that we are actually going to start spending money/resources on good major league pieces this offseason.

That's what everyone was saying about Girardi last year.

We don't need them to signal such things by wasting money on a manager. They are going to start spending money on good major league pieces this offseason. It doesn't even take reading tea leaves. They've gone out of their way to say it as plainly as possible.

Yeah, I don't need a signal that they are willing to waste a couple extra million on a manager, I want them to spend $100 million on a pitcher.

They can't flirt with Maddon. They either have to get a deal done or stay completely away. Making Sveum the fall guy for two horrible years where they didn't even try and then talking about a replacement for Renteria one year later is going to hurt their credibility if they don't actually seal the deal.

And Epstein 3 years ago.

Maddon is literally the one guy I'd have no problem overpaying when it comes to hiring a manager.

That said, Theo probably has a plan to snag Francona within a year or so, so it's likely all moot.

Yeah, I mean, my comments aside, I'm not saying I'd HATE it. Just saying that if our payroll is really as limited as it has been made out to be, and assuming it'd come out of player payroll, I'd rather not spend upwards of $5M on a manager.

My guess on Joe Maddon: He eventually winds up with the Cubs.

I'm totally drinking the Maddon Kool-Aid; I could be convinced that Maddon for $5 million would do more for the Cubs winning than, say, the better starting pitcher the extra money might land.

After a year off? What does eventually mean?

Good question.

Okay, enough smoke with the Maddon stuff that I'm officially intrigued...

I know this is wrong, but like hitting coaches, I don't care about managers for the most part. Ned flipping Yost is in the World Series, after all.

and mike matheney wins 90 games every year

My Matheny-hating Card fan buddy texted me, wanting Maddon as a replacement for Matheny.

Maddon’s agent, Alan Nero, says he contacted several teams after opt-out. Expects 4 to 5 legit suitors. Says Maddon wants to explore FA.

Within industry, #Cubs viewed as a leading contender for Maddon. Renteria signed through 2016. Team could simply pay off rest of his deal.
