even a replacement level DC should be an improvement. throw pasqualoni in charge and see what happens. tucker is horrible at everything. how can it possibly hurt?

I have no idea what makes you think Pasqualoni would even be replacement level.

the reason not to do it now is you lose credibility. Do you remember when Lovie found it impossible to hire an OC because he was constantly changing OC and has his own job on the line multiple times?

Trestman doesn't have good NFL coaching friends. He did a horrible job putting together his first staff and did no better when making "improvements" a year later. This team falling apart right now means the perception across the league is his job is in jeopardy.

I don't care about Tucker. He does need to be replaced, but I don't see Trestman/Emery finding a better guy for the job and convincing him to take it. I think what ultimately needs to happen is that everything needs to be blown up and start over, or barring that, then give Emery a second shot at finding the right head coach.

Trestman has failed at his job so far. The offense isn't good enough to him to be placing blame on his underlings.

Pasqualoni is about as known as an unaccomplished old coach can be. He's been around forever, despite extremely limited NFL experience (sound familiar?), and has done very little. He's not an answer, although I do think he's about the only viable option if you were to fire Tucker today.

Man, I am just not liking the Cutler contract every time he has a game like this. I know there are no alternatives but this feels so much like Soriano's deal.

I love the dude, he's statistically the best QB I have ever seen in a Bears jersey. But after 3 years there is the possibility of cutting him with a pretty negligible cap hit, right?

Someone make me feel better about Cutler stat!

Soriano's deal was better.

oh god i missed an opportunity to make fun of someone thinking the soriano contract was some sort of disaster

This was the steamrolling that the 49ers game was shaping up to be. But for the late hit, some helpful SF play calls, and Colin Kaepernick, the Bears could easily be sitting on 2-6.

A couple of bad Cutler INTs against Buffalo and Carolina and the Bears are 5-3

Yeah, playing the "what if" game is actually a positive for the Bears. They really should be 5-3 or even 4-4 if you want to give the 49ers that win.

what the hell? I mean, if you really want to, you can flip SF and Buffalo games and keep us at 3-5, but bear in mind that that was the second or third worst game of Kapernick's career (maybe the worst not played in Seattle, which makes it arguably the worst), while you can't even pretend to say that about any of Cutler's performances this year. The Bears haven't been unlucky. They've been bad.

I agree 100% with what you are saying Goony. And the credibility thing is a real issue with firing Tucker, but I still say F it and fire him anyway. Obviously, it doesn't matter because they aren't going to do it. Maybe Pasqualoni calls a more aggressive game? If a team is going to give up 51 points, you might as well give up 51 points on six 80-yard TDs. If you aren't getting pressure and your DBs can't cover. Blitz! Your defenders still can't cover, but at least the QB doesn't have all day to pick which wide open receiver he wants to throw to. When you blitz you can also jump routes because you don't have to worry about the slow developing stuff that the offense doesn't have time to run.

Also, maybe firing Tucker lets everyone know to be on edge and that they are playing for their jobs. I'm sure they already know that, but this would show them that status quo is not going to be OK. Bench a couple vets. Make some changes on offense too if needed. Special teams.

Yeah, I mean, I'm all for the F it idea. I just think there's a perfectly good and reasonable reason not to call for Tucker's head right now. But I can do without good and reasonable with the Bears.

Edit: Just real quick searching found that the Ravens fired OC Cam Cameron in DECEMBER of 2012, replaced him with Jim Caldwell, and they won the Super Bowl 2 months later when Flacco went nuts.

So I guess you can fire a coordinator, replace him with a corpse, and get better results. In that case, fire Tucker immediately.

Exactly. I don't know if it will work, but could it get worse than it is right now? In 25% of their games this year, the opponent has punted 1 time or less. That's inexcusable, injuries or not.

Punting with a giant lead in the second half doesn't even count.

The defense is what we thought it'd be.

Look at the poll results. It's what half of us thought it would be. The other half thought it would be better

9 wins isn't making the playoffs in the NFC. Hell, 10 wins might not this year.

10 wins for the Bears basically means beating Detroit twice, so I can't see why it wouldn't

No coach is going to fix this sorryass roster. The Bears need to string together some good drafts and increase the speed of this team

The roster has enough talent. But I agree with the need for speed.

I apologize I should have clarified. Soriano never lived up to being paid $18 mil a year, just like Cutler looks like he is not going to live up to his contract if he keeps turning the ball over. Both were over paid, decent players, but not worth the money in the long run (though Cutler has time to make up some of it). Both teams overpaid and bid against themselves. There was no team going to give Cutler this money even if he was on the open market. That is all.

Never did I compare the dollar amounts or say it was like a disaster.

Yeah, he did.

Depends on how you look at it. On a year by year basis solely, some years he came close, some (one?) years he provided surplus value, but overall he came up well short thanks to a couple of shitty seasons.

How do you figure they have enough talent? The depth is awful at the LB/WR/TE/S positions and some of the players are old and done. A lack of young talent. That is compounding the horrible coaching issues. Angelos drafting combined with Emery's first draft and bad contracts handed out this offseason are heavily affecting this team. I do like Phil Emery, but his offseason moves (aside from Willie Young) and coaching hire look bad. Not drafting Chandler Jones and having 1 of the 3rd/4th/5th round picks sticking in the first draft is huge.

I don't know if I should be irritated about that [expletive] press conference yesterday or understanding about the fact that they're going to preach patience and positivity. I would of liked to have heard some stern words and some accountability for the players.

I'm not sure what sort of verbage would have successfully expressed that message. It's the NFL, they can all be cut tomorrow. Accountability isn't a huge issue. Sucking is the problem.

Well, he averaged 3.37 WAR per season over 6.5 seasons with the Cubs. At $5 million/win, he was worth $16.85 million/year. At $5.5 million/win, he's at $18.53 million/year. That's with his sub-replacement season, and his 1 win season. Yeah, if you are fair and look at his value over the whole contract, he doesn't look as good thanks to this season, but this perception was from his play with the Cubs, not people saying that he wasn't worth it because he was awful this year with the Yankees.

He was pretty much worth the contract for when he was playing with the Cubs. I don't think it's fair to say he never lived up to it.

Like what?

Emerys [expletive] 'stats' about Jay Cutler winning, his thoughts on Shea staying as a starting LB, Allen showing speed and an ability to bend the edge etc. Even the crap about the Solider Field sod was dumb.

Trestman was non-commital as always about the situation this team is in. The fact that he probably should be riding the team this week instead of giving them more time off.
