I've been under the impression(from Mooney) we were capped out and actually wanted/needed to move Castillo and maybe Wood, to get to budget.

However, as TT said, just use the Moncada money. We were obviously planning on bidding, if he's dead set on signing soon-it makes sense that we snoop around on Shields now.

Assuming they actually had much.

We'd also lose a 2nd round draft pick if we sign Shields, so that money that we can't spend in the draft could go to Shields (if we don't spend it on IFAs)

As you may have expected, the Cubs’ offer might be limited to three years, according to Kaplan.

Apparently this was on the radio today.

Hmmmm

Also from the BN piece, an article from Marlins writers saying it's unlikely the Fish sign him: http://miamiherald.typepad.com/fish_bytes/2015/02/marlins-end-losing-streak-win-arbitration-case-wlatos-not-a-major-player-in-james-shields-sweepstake.html.

Derrick Goold also says the Cards are out.

Capped out? Aren't the Cubs near the bottom in overall payroll even with the Lester signing?

Apparently, you aren't familiar with PTR.

Pending any additional trades or signings, we're at ~$125 million.

Bob Nightengale @BNightengale

The #Padres, where James Shields makes his home, have to be considered favorites for his services. We will soon find out if they get him.

Well, I am familiar with PTR and his poor history of payroll flexibility. And in the big picture, I don't really have that much of a problem with how he has spent the money so far. If the team is going to suck, why throw more money at it. But, when the time comes to "go for it", which might be just about right now, "capped out" isn't really a term that should be thrown around as an excuse to not sign some one like Shields.

Kaplan said on his show yesterday that the Cubs want to do 3 years. And pushed that his source is really good.

Would love that.

Yea, I'm just not seeing Shields ending up with the Cubbies. San Diego makes way too much sense here.

There is a growing sense among some of the folks involved in James Shields conversations that he will probably land with the Padres.
