In case people are still keeping track since some suspected Shields would be another target after the Lester signing...

Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe reports that James Shields' contract demands are expected to be around five years and $110 million.

It's the same amount left on Cole Hamels' contract, assuming Hamels' option is picked up, and is a reasonable demand after Jon Lester landed a $155 million deal from the Cubs. Cafardo says that the Giants and Red Sox are "in the picture" for Shields, while the Yankees "may be another suitor." Shields, who just turned 33, holds a 3.64 ERA over his eight full seasons and has made at least 31 starts every year during that stretch.

I'd be okay with the $22m AAV, but 5 years for a 33 year old sucks.

Cubs may be looking to add top flight starter to rotation. Sources confirm they are kicking tires on James Shields. http://bit.ly/1AutCKc

David Kaplan @thekapman

Cubs have been waiting to see where market goes+Shields has interest. There are several others involved but history w/Maddon is a factor.

God damnit, Dave.

That'd be entertaining. I'd [expletive] love to sign him if it doesn't cause us to miss out next offseason. How far has the price tag dropped?

Who knows.

Also quick question and not necessarily related - can a team and player agree contractually that the team will NOT put forth a qualifying offer?

Yeah, Im pretty sure Ervin Santana just did that last offseason.

I mean it is just friggin Kaplan using vague language.

kaplan might be the most connected reporter out there

Man I always lost track of who is actually reliable in Chicago media.

As for this - I'd say as long as it doesn't completely prevent them from going after one of the superior options next winter, go for it.

[expletive] it, this is a great opportunity to Scherzer the [expletive] out of a contract. Give him a 5 year deal at 20 per(I still think he's getting close to this with Padres desperate, and we'd need to pay over to structure it like this)

8 mill for 5 years and 6 mill for each of the 10 after that. 6 mill won't matter(hopefully) once we have a TV deal and it wouldn't keep us from getting a big name SP next offseason either.

I think he also has a history of being a Cubs mouthpiece, no?

Wonder if we have a little more payroll than people think. The day after Moncada pretty much eliminates us we are suddenly in on Shields...

A little bit different since some of the Moncada thing could be deferred over three years, but there's a chance we've got a little change left., especially since dumping Castillo/Wood/Wada (if needed) frees up like 11 mil if we need it.

I like how the Scherzer deal is structured but is Shields the right guy for the same structure? In other words- I think the Cubs are better off using this deal for a greater talent - like next year.

Gotta believe this is an attempt to drive the price up on the Cardinals.

It had better be more than that. If they add Shields on top of already adding Heyward the division is out of the reach barring a ton of bad breaks for the Cards.

I was thinking if we did something like this on Shields, we'd still be able to go after an elite arm next year as well.

I think the point might be to drive up the price beyond the Cardinals price range. I don't recall them being in on Shields so I feel like they are only in because they think they can get a bargain
