Week 3: Bears (1-1) @ Jets (1-1) MNF 7:30 PM ESPN

Posted
The running game has been non-existent. 3 games in and I'm still waiting to see signs of the benefit of "year 2 in the system" which I was convinced would lead to further improvements.

I will say this for the running game. 1) It was probably not a huge part of the playbook to begin with, given our struggles with running the ball so far, and the Jets being a very good run stopping defense. But also, 2) once Fiametta left due to injury, they probably abandoned even more of the run game. They still used Forte with those short over the top dump passes to make up for some of what they weren't getting in the rushing game.

That's basically what Cutler was saying in the post game. Something about how they knew coming into the game that running between the tackles wasn't going to be a big part of the game and Forte wasn't going to have a 100 yard game on the ground.

First time since 2012 the Bears held a team under 20 pts.

you stole my thunder! I said that last night. Last year was the first year in Bears history that they failed to hold an opponent under 20 points.

I read that from Banedon and thought, "already mentioned, but worth repeating!"

Ah...whoops. Missed that.

No worries, like Tim said it is worth repeating. It's just one of those weird streaks that I've tracked in the back of my head since last year because I'm weird like that and I was excited to post that the streak has been broken.

of all the people who could've recovered that ball on that play, bostic is a really odd choice to call out

Was it him or Fuller that ended up touching it out of bounds? DJ Williams should have recovered the fumble in bounds but one of those 2 got to it first...not a very heads up play.

Fuller

I will not attack Fuller because he's awesome and the best player ever but that and the running out of the end zone after the int [-X

Oh god yeah that run-out, why why why?

Rookie mistake

Oh one other memory. The MetLife banner ad had a Planters Peanut ad up that said something like the "power of the peanut" and quick thinking me got a little video of it, just prior to the next play (Bears on defense), hoping for a peanut punch for artistic reasons. But it ended up being that big ass play by the Jets and I deleted it.

That one sweep was kind of ballsy and good.

Yeah, that was an amazing dump truck sized hole to run through that they never got close to replicating the rest of the game. Trestman really seems to like running the sweep in 3rd and short situations and it makes me really nervous. It seems like they get it more often than not though.

Wow Fuller with a +5.0! Both Houston and Allen rated highly as well. Allen did seem to get better as the game went on, and made his presence felt on the final drive.

Chicago Bears – Performances of Note

Lamarr Houston, DE: +1.8

Breakdown: Still waiting for his first sack as a Chicago Bear, Houston notched five pressures (with a sixth nullified by a penalty) last night and added a batted pass in a disruptive display as a pass rusher. Houston played a season-high 17 snaps at defensive tackle last night with two of his pressures coming from an interior alignment.

Signature Stat: Houston recorded his first stop of the season last night, by this point last season he had 11.

Kyle Fuller, CB: +5.0

Breakdown: Fuller backed up his successful fill-in for Charles Tillman last week with a strong first start last night against the Jets, with the only real blot on his copybook the missed tackle that sprung Greg Salas’ 51-yard gain late in the game. Around that, Fuller forced two fumbles and feasted on some of Geno Smith’s worst throws, breaking on late and forced passes to his side of the field collecting a pass defense and an interception.

Signature Play: It would seem that Tillman has been teaching Fuller the “Peanut Punch” with Fuller’s two forced fumbles boosting his grade and his second forced fumble at 11.23 in Q3 was particularly Tillman-esque.

Jared Allen, DE: +3.1

Breakdown: Like Houston, Allen has been quiet on the stat sheet since he arrived in Chicago but hasn’t matched that with strong work that base stats don’t record. He’s still yet to pick up that first sack for the Bears but he was active as both a pass rusher (three hits and three hurries) and run defender (four stops) en route to his highest game grade since Week 9 of last season.

Signature Play: On the first play of the Jets’ final drive (Q4, 3.10) Allen exploited a deep Geno Smith drop to drive around Ferguson’s outside shoulder and hit Smith just after he threw what should have been an interception to Jonathan Bostic.

Saw on Twitter last night that Allen was quoted as saying he still struggles with zone read and once the Jets abandoned it late, he was able to get after the QB a lot more.

Should help him facing a more traditional offense next week but he's definitely lost a step.

Not yet, but some Fuller superlatives:

dan durkin @djdurkin

RT @RLiuNFL: .@ChicagoBears Kyle Fuller (@kbfuller17) is only @nfl player in past 20 years w/ 3+ INTs & 2+ FFs in 1st 3 games of a season

dan durkin

@djdurkin

Per @PFF #Bears Kyle Fuller now has the second-best coverage grade for a cornerback at +5.8, and is their top graded corner overall at +5.9.

PFF Grades: Ouch most of the offense and Lance Briggs:

Yeah, these grades still have me scratching my head. Allen did great in the 4th quarter, but seems like to get a grade that good you should have to have a good entire game.

Slauson needs to hurry back.

Ola cannot be our seventh best OL. I don't believe it.

He's not been a complete disaster filling in and probably would have been in the top five in many recent years. But yeah, Slauson definitely needs to get back.

I also thought Briggs looked quicker to the ball than he'd been the first couple weeks. May be completely wrong, but he looked better to me last night.

I didn't notice him very much at all.
