A lot of pessimism on the various local networks (670 The Score, The Game, ESPNChicago) regarding the Bears, their defense and lack of depth. Many paint Trestman as the 'Offensive Lovie' with no clue about Special Teams and Defense. Man I hope they're wrong...

I don't see that last sentence as necessarily a bad thing. What does Sean Payton know about defense? But he has a ring and a perennial contender.

Yep. Pat Mannelly didn't view it as a bad thing either. Basically said that Lovie's problem was that he couldn't seem to get good offensive coaches in there. I guess if you really don't like Tucker, you could draw a parallel there, but honestly...I'd rather be strong offense and weak defense than vice versa in this league right now.

It's not either/or. All I ever wanted was good offense. I can see taking a hit on D to get it, but total unmitigated collapse is a different story.

We're talking in circles with this thing though. I'm going to kick a dog if Tucker doesn't do something this year.

Everybody would like to have the #1 offense, #1 defense, and #1 ST...but that's not real realistic. Every team is going to have weaknesses, and while we're working on improving the defense, I'd much rather my team weakness be on that side of the ball.

Get yourself good players and a decent coordinator. Then it doesn't matter who the HC is. Payton has had several DC's over the years (Greg Williams, Rob Ryan and - IIRC - Steve Spagnola). Get a good one and get out of his way.

But they're defenses have been bottom 1/4 every year other than 2 top 5 seasons under Payton.

Wait a minute. Did you even read my post?

I never said anything even close to this.

the general perception on this board is that Manuel is bad, but his numbers from last year aren't terrible and he's capable of some big games. i'm not convinced he's a liability for buffalo in this game.

I'm sure they signed Kyle Orton to a 2 year $11million deal because they were so confident in Manuel. They were so confident, they didn't make him a team captain.

Manuel is bad, and it's not just a "perception on this board". He had a crummy preseason (yes, I know...preseason), and most people seem to think it's a matter of time before Orton is handed the job.

Really? I'm not questioning you but I'm surprised Buffalo wouldn't give Manuel this entire season to sort things out.

The moment they put Orton in, Buffalo accepts being losers for a good long time.

Ok, I'm overstating it with "most people". But I've certainly heard it said by a number of "experts", for what that's worth.

Bills starting corner Stephon Gilmore is out. Tallest DB on the team. Could be a big loss against these receivers.

Gilmore practiced every day against Alshon Jeffery at So Carolina for 2-3 years also so they lose some familiarity. Our old friend, Corey Graham is getting the start in his place.
