Arrieta.

Yeah, will side with this and I've been a big Hendricks supporter.

Hendricks is amazing at the $$ but Arrieta is definitely the better pitcher.

Hendricks has been cool as hell and he's younger, but damn, when Arrieta is on he is DIRTY.

Lester,Arietta, and Hendricks next year? Then sign Price in '16 when we make the run for it.. Price,Lester, Arrieta, Hendricks....Oh God

Turner will be better than Hendricks by 2016.

Aside from his first professional inning, Hendricks has pitched 40 2/3 innings and given up 30 hits, 6 walks, and 5 ER while striking out 26 over 6 games. Good for a 1.11 ERA, 0.89 WHIP, and 4.33 K/BB.

Is there any kind of metric or way to determine how good a pitcher is at hitting his spots? Hendricks seems to have amazing control -- combined with that Dartmouth intellect....Ive been soooo surprisingly impressed so far. What gets he hopeful is his ability to get outs doesnt seem totally dependent on throwing so hard he's at risk of inevitable injury. What a cheap, young, and good group of pitchers in Arrieta, Turner, Ramirez, Rondon, and Hendricks.

HE MUST HAVE MAJORED IN SOMETHING TOWEL-RELATED.

The [expletive] does a "Dartmouth intellect" have to to do with pitching.

Sometimes you are so obtuse.

If only I had pitched for Dartmouth.

I would say having an above average intelligence has quite a bit to do with being a successful control pitcher. Ability to understand psychology, certain metrics, etc. Why is that so crazy? Its not like they're robots out there with no intuition.

Maddux didn't even go to college.

There's obviously a ton of work that goes into it, but I highly doubt whether or not the pitcher went to a good school, or if they did well in school, has a ton to do with how well they can place their pitches.

And so far we're seeing nothing that shows that "smartness" = better control pitcher.

i think the idea is that being smart helps a guy who gets by on movement and command, not that it helps him have those traits. it helps him use his pitching repertoire, doesn't help his actual repertoire.

i think pitching in general (especially with stuff that isn't all that overpowering physically) is cerebral enough that this is a reasonable thing to think.

I agree with the general idea that pitchers are probably often the smarter players on the team, but the rest is unproven bunk. BUNK, I SAY. Now create a new game thread.
