Javy's bat speed has been loosely compared to Sheffield...if he remotely gets close to his numbers - it would be awesome...

Sheffield career: 10.7 K%, 13.5% BB, .292 Avg.

i didn't think that there was any way that that could be true. but it is. Gary Sheffield once walked 142 times in a season and only struck out 66 times. i don't think anyone appreciated that at the time, it's incredible. yeah, Javy isn't Gary Sheffield nor will he ever be. Sheffield had the k-rate of a slap hitter and the walk rate of a motherfucking hulk.

i would be absolutely elated if Javy had a season in which he walked 66 times and struck out 142.

It's crazy - even his first years w/ the Brewers the K and BB rates were good. What the hell were they thinking?

They didn't need Sheffield because of the emergence of the ultimate SS platoon of Bill Spiers and Dale Sveum. That and they thought it would be realy good for marketing if they had a guy named Ricky Bones on their team.

Actually the reason Sheffield didn't last with the Brewers because he was a cancer on the team. He purposely threw a ball away from SS and the Brewers lost the game. He was frustrated by the team losing but chose a chicken *hit way to show it. You can't allow a player to stay on your team if he pulls stuff like that. Much like Garry Templeton of the Cards flipping off the local fans and he was yanked into the dugout by Whitey Herzog and eventually dealt to the Padres for Ozzie Smith.

There's no question that Sheffield was talented and had a quick bat, Brewers management had to deal him.

I had absolutely no idea Gary Sheffield started on the Brewers.

And, if you'll pardon the irony, Felix Leiter is again wrong about everything.

I don't think he's necessarily wrong about the Brewers needing to get rid of Sheffield. If the team thought he was tanking plays (and if his teammates did) they were kind of forced to trade him. It would be disaster to keep a guy who's knowingly effing up. Thus isn't a case of Sammy's boom box being too loud. It's a situation where a guy could purposely cost you ball games.

This all presumes people could tell he was tanking while with the team. I know he later sort of admitted to it. I don't remember if that was the perception while he was there.

Going from 2.9 WAR to -1.3 WAR might have people think you're tanking.

Glad to see your clueless streak is in tact.

Sheffield also claimed that Brewer management was racist by trying to move him to 3rd and letting Bill Spiers play SS.

He quit on his teammates and accused the front office of racial prejudice.

He was a cancer.

Baez has a .250 OBP and a -1 UZR at 2B. He is playing at a 3+ win pace.

Yeah, how dare he accuse white people of racism?

Baez really is going to have the most ridiculous line to end the year. Like high teens in home runs and almost 100 strikeouts in a third of a season.

I'm also warming to the idea that if Baez ends up long term at 2B, it will almost be impossible for him to NOT be a productive player. He should be at least average defensively there - probably better than average in reality - but the offensive bar is so low for 2B that even if he is striking out 200 times and has an OBP of like .280, he will be an asset because he is hitting 30-40 home runs a year.

You think he'll have 10+ HRs in the last 33 games? I don't think so. I think teams will get enough film by the end of the season and start throwing to the areas he can't lay off. Maybe he makes an adjustment and get a dozen more but I think the most likely scenario is he keeps hitting in the low .200s but doesn't have as good of a HR-to-hit ratio. I think he'll end around 12 HRs which would still be ridiculous for 1/3 of a season.

Film on him? You don't need "film on him" to know how to pitch to him.

He was, quite literally, born with film on him.

Most of Javy's dingers have been with no men on base - and maybe that's why he's batting 2nd. If he's 5th or 6th with men on, and with his high K rate - teams might pitch him differently. From the Cubs perspective, if he's K'ing too much with men on, they might feel there's too much pressure on a young player.

Meh, it's more the fact that they want Rizzo hitting behind him so he'll see a lot of strikes. If/when he starts laying off the bad pitches he'll then get hot again and his K% will go down, JUST LIKE HE ALWAYS DOES.
