The pythag doesn't count because it's a bunch of misfit toys or something

there is also the fact that they are now 17-14 in their last 31.

Plus, looking at the players you've got four solid to very good starting pitchers, lots of young talent in the pen and Rizzo, Castro and Valbuena in the lineup. Not exactly a collection of flaming garbage.

imagine how fun it would've felt had they managed 17-14 in their first 31

"I like batting fourth because there are usually runners on base," Castro said. "I just like that they put me in a spot and leave me there. If they keep moving me around, it breaks my concentration."

DON'T MOVE HIM. YET.

Alvarezs 2012 was really good

he probably meant 2011

And I think Olt, if he puts it together, is capable of a 2.5 WAR season. That's what a low batting average, low OBP, solid SLG, lots of homers, an average amount of walks, a crap load of strikeouts, and below average 3B defense gets you these days. Except Olt has solid defense.

Like everyone in AAA is capable of a 2.5 win season as the high end of their projection. You can't give them all jobs because of the high likelihood that they won't get there.

I never said he deserves to start if that's what you're implying. I'd actually prefer he get sent down to work with Manny but there's already two 3rd basemen on that roster who are more important than he is at the moment.

Damn it. I saw 4 pages after the game and was hoping it was Kyle and Ryan talking about Arrieta.

It is a collection of flaming garbage; you can count on one mangled hand the number of everyday offensive starters you want sticking around for any extended period of time. Those few plus the pen and a couple starters makes it a collection of flaming garbage instead of a collection of flaming [expletive] bags. That's progress, but let's not go nuts yet.

I'm one of the guys that really thought Olt was going to make it. I'm also usually one of the last guys to lose hope on prospects, as a rule.

I hope we keep Olt up and give him consistent at bats again this season. Doesn't mean I think it's likely he'll produce, but maybe he salvages something. It's not likely and my expectations have dropped, but we're not bringing anyone important up, might as well give him enough time to where we're 100% sure, instead of 99%.

I do still think he's got potential to help us as a backup 1B/3B/LF guy.

But with Olt isn't kind of a special case? His vision is all fucked up, and seemingly the only thing that helped were the drops that he had to stop or decided to stop using?

I'd like to think our management team and FO would have the foresight to figure out if Olt's eyes were messing with him again, not to mention he wouldn't be stubborn enough to play through the issues after how bad he was last year. I'm sure that part of him is corrected. I just think he's overmatched in a league he has little experience in and needs to work more on his approach because one of his big strengths in the minors was his plate patience and he has zero of it at the MLB level. Even last year in Iowa when he couldn't see [expletive] he had 20 walks in 39 games. He's only drawn 14 walks in 54 at the major league level.

Like davell said though I think it would be nice if he got consistent playing time to work on it, but me personally I like that the Cubs aren't out of the realm of competing for a playoff spot so I'd rather the AB's go to people who can perform consistently like Valbuena. But where do you put him at AAA? I'd love for him to get some work in with Manny, but they already have Bryant and Villanueva there. Has there ever been a case of a player being blocked in a demotion to the AAA level?

No that was last year when he wasn't sure what was up and was blind for a few months. We were led to believe the problem was fixed in the offseason - I think it had something to do with allergies, maybe?
