i don't consider losing versteeg/bickell/leddy to be gutting the roster. i'd rather lose all 3 of them than lose oduya for next season. and i still don't see how bickell could have any trade value at all. i think it would be hard for the hawks to give him away.

Leddy isn't going before Oduya for sure. I'm surprised Stan didn't get anything done. Maybe reading too much into his quotes but he seemed disappointed he could close the deal for Kesler. Anaheim gave up a decent package but I think we could have topped it.

He's a power forward, teams value size. He does well in the playoffs, teams value that too. His salary may be higher than you'd like but there are 3 things to consider. Bickell had 2 knee surgeries which slowed him down last year. After signing a big contract, players tend to press as though they have to earn all that money on every shift- for example, Hjammer who a lot of people wanted to trade after 2011 but those same people would never admit that now. Finally, there are teams that are closer to the cap floor that wouldn't mind paying a young power forward the salary that young power forwards command.

The Hawks don't randomly give out sweet deals to players. If you look around the league, guys like Bollig are getting the $1.5 million that he's going to get (Ryan Reeves for example). I don't like Bollig, I don't feel that he's an asset to the team or agree with having him on the team but if you want a guy like that on the roster- which obviously Q does- you have to either pay him that money or bring up the next Bollig type. At Rock Vegas they have Mashinter who is basically the next Bollig though hopefully is more useful.

What would we get for Sharp?

Funny thing, despite all the rumors I have yet to see anyone even attempt to answer that question.

Sharp would make a good captain for young rebuilding team that needed an effective veteran leader to give credibility during the getting better phase. Dallas for instance, maybe Calgary, perhaps Ottawa.

Sharp would also hold a lot of appeal to a team that needs more offense to put them over the top Canadiens, Rangers and maybe Tampa.

So there should be a strong market for him. If it were me, I'd want a good prospect (a goalie maybe) or a decent already in the NHL player and a 2nd and 4th round pick depending on the team. The first group can pay less by absorbing all of his salary. The second group would likely want to send somebody back for payroll flexibility.

Wow. Getting away from that dumb contract is a wise move. Not that I didn't like Bollig at times, but that contract was silly.

Getting a 2nd for Bollig was a really good job.

It was actually a 3rd but considering Dongballs was an undrafted FA that's still great value.

Not to mention getting rid of that salary.

I was very happy to see Bolig go. I was very surprised to see a 3rd round pick.

As for the salary cap its about 2 million below what the estimates are. Perhaps due to the Canadian loony uncertainty. Next season when Kane/Toews contracts kick in it should be around 74 million. Hopefully they sign for 10.5 million or less. I would have to think Odulya will be gone in coming days. I think Sharp stays for this season and is traded after the parade next year.

Do you even consider the possibility of letting one of them go if the cap hit is too high?

In the abstract I want to at least consider it, but I just can't accept the idea of losing either.

Letting one of them go? No way. Trade, maybe in the most extreme of circumstances.

That's what I meant, but yeah.

If one of them were to go, I would say its Kane, but I think the Cubs winning the world series next year is more likely than either of them being let go or traded.

In the back of my mind I've always thought there was a chance Buffalo would do something crazy to trade for Kane. But in the real world I just don't think it is at all plausible or useful.

If Buffalo gets the number one overall pick next season, I think the Hawks may be able to recoup their loss of Kane if McDavid becomes the player some think he will. But that would take several years. I really cannot think of any other way the Hawks would be able to get back equal return for Kane or Toews. Hawks are kind of in a tough spot because they are in a great spot....they have 2 future HofFers, who are still very young, who have good experience. Personally I think they have to bite the bullet and pay them, and then figure out how it will work under the cap
