I dunno, I think that's a TON of assets we'd be offering in terms of Gibson, Butler AND Miritoc plus two 1st's. Those properties have a ton of value in other deals Minny might make and probably allow you to be fairly competitive while still having multiple lottery picks over the next couple of years.

If you get only Wiggins from Cleveland you are leaving virtually room for error; he has to be Jesus in basketball shoes.

Cle is offering more than wiggins, though, right? Aren't Bennett and a first rounder also part of the package? Edited by snoodmonger

In theory it has to be more than Wiggins, since by rule until he signs a contract he counts for $0 in salary matching. In reality, this also seems a lot like Minnesota trying to drum up interest since the Cavs aren't interested in trading Wiggins(he's rumored to sign his deal tomorrow/this week) and GSW won't budge on Thompson either.

Agreed - Minny is probably planting a lot of bull shite.

The depth takes a hit, but rotations shrink in the playoffs anyway. To get a legitimate 25-12 guy in the prime of his career for a guy that's probably peaked (Taj), and two relative unknowns seems like a pretty good deal to me. Plus, you would also keep Butler in this scenario.

Yes please.

Boy, I'm bad at evaluating basketball trades, but that seems like a lot.

Not really.

1. Cleveland would not be getting Love.

2. Mirotic nor McDermott were not rostered players last year, so Gibson is the only asset from the previous roster included in the deal. Love > Gibson.

3. Mirotic and McDermott are not guaranteed to be good players in the NBA.

It does weaken the bench quite a bit, however. Enough so, that in the big picture, hanging onto the guys we have now might be better than trading all of them for Love. But, Cleveland will probably get Love if the Bulls don't beat the offer, which makes them a true powerhouse.

Yeah, Butler's no star by any means, but being able to keep him is pretty important for this year's team. Without him, they'd have a pretty gaping hole on the wings.

I don't even think Butler's that great, but the difference between him being your primary wing player over Tony Snell is a pretty big one.

Offensively, he's very limited, but they need someone to defend the perimeter.

The biggest problem with any Love deal is that it's technically a rental. Giving that up and then watching Love bolt for GSW or Cleveland in Free Agency would be pretty devastating, so you'd need some assurance he'd be willing to stay long term. For GSW there's the obvious hometown angle and if they somehow were able to keep Thompson that makes a nice core of Love/Curry/Thompson. Cleveland has the New Big 3 angle and maybe 4 if they can hold onto Wiggins. The Bulls would be really strong with Love/Noah/Rose as a nucleus too, you just have to decide how much weight to put the odds of something going wrong(Rose injury, Wiggins takes off making Cleveland a more appealing destination, Barnes takes off making GSW attractive, etc) that would leave the Bulls with nothing after this season.

I can't imagine that this trade would be done without an extension.

If the interest in Love is as strong as some rumors would make us believe(I'm skeptical, but it's possible), then they may not have that option. Love has little incentive to sign an extension before next year, and some interested parties could be relatively confident(or at the least, more confident than the Bulls would) in their ability to keep him in Free Agency.

He has incentive if the receiving party won't pull the trigger on a deal without a commitment from him to sign an extension. And the Wolves might be of the same mind if they maximize the return package by having Love agree to an extension.

It all depends on how badly he wants out of Minnesota and if he's content to play out the season or at least until the deadline.

Also, I have little doubt that Love would sign an extension if he did end up in Chicago assuming Rose is healthy and effective (if Rose isn't, it doesn't matter and the Bulls are better off by completely bottoming out anyway and letting Love walk). That team would be very good and he's not going to leave Chicago under those circumstances.

My point is that if the Bulls are offering X and require an extension but someone like GSW/Cleveland is offering X-Y but doesn't require an extension, then not only is there little reason for Love to sign, there's less reason for Minnesota to push Love to agree to an extension unless Y is some huge value.

True. But I think the Bulls would be willing to roll the dice on getting Love without agreeing to an extension. It all comes back to Rose again, if he's good and healthy Love will almost certainly sign an extension. If he's not, they'll be ok with letting Love walk and going for a complete rebuild (it's not like McDermott and Mirotic are all that valuable without cornerstone pieces in place).

According to a Timberwolves source, the Bulls made a "significant offer'' for Kevin Love this morning and it's being "heavily considered.''

According to the source, Timberwolves reached out to Bulls last night to let them know Cavs offer was best on the table ...

.... Gar Forman played poker face for about 12 hours, and then pushed all the chips in this morning. Confirmed Taj and McDermott ...

McDermott signing would hold deal back from being official for 30 days, but could agree in principle.

On the TWolves side, there is great pressure to start winning, and another rebuild with the Cavs deal is not ideal.

Forman and Pax are in a win-now window, and made the decision that Love in Chicago is much better than Love in Cleveland with James.

Bulls felt Timberwolves were initially bluffing to drive up the price Tue. night, but in backchannels with Love, felt like Cavs were close.

... as well as "other assets.'' Mirotic is still unconfirmed.
