Apparently Taj and Noah will be present at Melo meeting so probably no Taj salary dump to get further under the cap. Assuming you can move nearly everything else (I'm gonna assume we keep Smith, Bairstow, and McDermott though) our max offer to Melo would start in the low 17 range I think.

Rose

McDermott

Melo

Taj

Noah

Smith

Bairstow

+Room MLE (around 2.3m) and vet mins

More than a little worried we haven't heard any salary dumping rumors as our current offer tops out at about 10-11. Hopefully they're just being quiet though.

Does that assume a Boozer amnesty?

Source says that the Bulls are trying to trade the contracts of Carlos Boozer and Mike Dunleavy Jr. No surprise, but Bulls are trying.

Boozer doesn't really matter since we're already assuming an amnesty (though would save JR actual cash).

Dunleavy gets our offer up to around 13-14M. Following player dumps up our offer approximately:

Butler +1.5

McDermott +1.3

Randolph +1.3

Snell +0.9

Smith +0.4

Bairstow +0.0

Randolph is the only guy I see us really having to add additional value to move. Smith is almost pointless to dump for that incremental bump.

I have a hard time seeing anything less than 16M starting salary for Melo.

Why are they wasting their time? Recruiting means nothing.

I've thought all along people were overconfident about a Boozer amnesty, doesn't seem like a foregone conclusion to me.

Surely Reinsdorf is smart enough to recognize a sunk cost.

Paxson said just Friday that the amnesty is an option at their disposal.

Read it how you will.

Amnesty Rose

I know/think this is a joke, but isn't he not eligible as he signed his new contract after the new CBA?

EDIT - yeah only Boozer and Jo are eligible on the Bulls.

I'm not sure how clear cut the language is but it was an extension agreed to before the new CBA. I'm sure they could find grounds to fight it.

But yes, obviously a joke.

To my knowledge The 2010 Heat are the main, and maybe only example of "recruiting" of a top free agent. And that situation is way way different. Those guys were friends, had a plan to do this, the heat were one of the very few if not only teams that could add three near max deals, and the inherent advantage of miami. It's not like wade was les miles. They also had pat Riley working on it.

Did James Harden bring in Howard? Give me an example of a star player successfully recruiting another star player. This doesn't actually exist.

I don't care if it's only happened once in spectacular fashion; it still can't hurt, and I'm sure at the very least they're at least usually making cursory calls and [expletive]. Rose has gone out of his way in the past to say he's not even gonna do that, which just seems pointlessly obtuse and stubborn. There's a difference between a player simply not doing it and what was has vocalized multiple times. It's like he thinks he's insulting the other returning players too much.

Why is the last thing dismissed so easily. Any lobbying to get melo requires the amnesty of boozer.

And I get the point thy rose is being stubborn and again hurting his image by not just public ally saying the words "I want melo". That said if rose and melo aren't friends I don't think a personal appeal will make any difference so I don't care that he stays out of it.

There was a time when rose was an MVP and the anti Lebron. He said he doesn't recruit and that the merits of playing in chicago are self evident, and he didn't dance when they announced him at the ASG and everybody used to love him for it. He gets hurt three strait years and people hate him for it.

The not dancing thing was awesome, but then you kinda figured he wasn't THAT much of an idiot and would basically go out of his way to say he didn't think the Bulls needed to sign anyone when it came time to make nice.

I get it; he's just a dumb kid managed by stupid jerks. But when someone asks him if he's recruiting just give some version of "no comment" or "we'll handle that privately." It's not hard.

And [expletive] Boozer; what, Noah is a jerk for being out there trying to woo Carmello? Please.

Yeah, recruiting isn't his job, but other stars DO do it, and we've seen it work. Rose not only doesn't do it, but he's gone out of his way to vocalize how much he doesn't like it and doesn't want to do it and how the Bulls don't need another star, etc., etc.. I would just like it if my team's star player seemed a little more invested in bringing another big name aboard.

Agreed. Rose, through Reggie, complained to the press over the winter for the Bulls to improve the roster even though they had the best record in the NBA or close to it the two last healthy years Rose had. Whether or not recruiting should be necessary isn't the point. It works. Stars want to be wanted. And the Bulls will be the old Bulls without Melo or Love. And Rose will be partially to blame. Reggie is bad for Derrick. Gotta get better people close to him.

I don't think lobbying or a star is brig a jerk I can just understand choosing to not do so publicly. If he has any relationship with melo as a fan I hope he leveraged it to help get melo here even if it means his current teammates are gone. But expecting him to do something he said he wasn't gonna do years ago is changing the goalposts. I do not recall Kobe recruiting. I recall Kobe (and Phil) lobbying to get rid of guys. In my opinion recruiting is a media driven FA. Driven thing and I don't think it matters. That said, I agree that rose should end this issue by making a statement that he wants to play with melo. And I agree his comments about his health were incredibly stupid. Basically he's not a media savvy individual.

How can we say Kobe's never reached out to anyone? I expect most of this to happen without it being public like what the Big Three did. Rose just gets extra scrutiny because he's said multiple times he won't do it and doesn't see a point in reaching out. Well, like it or not, the Big Three DID change things, and the Bulls have a golden opportunity here to make some critical moves that he potentially can help with. Does he have to? No. Is it a lock that it would help if he did? Of course not. But again, that the star of our time seems to only really like actually DOWNPLAYING the idea of them signing other big names is a tad disheartening.

I wish we weren't a part of this and got one or two solid pieces and bring over Mirotic. Again afflalo was a sure thing and he was there for us to take. We could move butler for room to get Ariza or some other marginal upgrades or tried to make the trade for Love. Tying up our resources in chase for melo.

Think back to 2010. Only th Heat were winners. Boozer was bad money, joe johnson was bad money, gay was bad money, stoudamire. Maybe the only big signing that wasn't a bad signing was David Lee and that's debate able.

First of all, a big star shouldn't need to be "recruited" by other players. If their precious egos are going to be shattered because they weren't showered with attention, then eff em'
