New York Knicks star Carmelo Anthony met at American Cut in NYC with Phil Jackson this week and was reportedly “in tears.” Rumor has it that the terms of their discussion was about Carmelo committing to signing with the Bulls as soon as Friday. He cannot physically sign with Chicago until July. I think it’s going to extremely difficult for Melo to turn down Phil.-TO

@mcten: The Lakers plan to reach out to the Chicago Bulls for permission to interview Tom Thibodeau, a league source tells http://t.co/8DsJGhr2Pi

If they offer their top 5 pick for Thibs, you take that deal. And then get on the phone with Fred Hoiberg.

Not sure why Carmelo would take a pay-cut for the Knicks. He has all the leverage and they have the space.

Im not a Phil fan. But I will concede that he must be a great coach. But seriously, we have nothing to go on that he can manage roster moves. And the total culture overhaul and total resuscitation thats needed in NYK cannot be done withouyt your CEO engaged entirely, full-time, something he isnt willing to do.

He has an ego, so i dont see him abdicating coaching decisions to first timer steve kerr nor not meddling in roster moves even if he landed a rock-star Gm like masi ujuri. Hes a coach, so what he knows he should not get involved with, and what he does not know is what he needs to get involved with. Add in Dolan, and I expect NYK to remain a mess for the near-mid future.

I would not take a pay cut to be involved with the knicks. In Chicago, you have a team that has all the elements of a championship squad except for a wing scorer.

Random thought...if the Lakers offered their 1st rounder this year for Thibs, would you be happy with that deal? Would the Bulls?

If you think Dante Exuum or Marcus Smart is more valuable than thibs you are absolutely out of your mind.

Talent wins in the NBA, not coaches. I doubt the Lakers put their pick on the table but you definitely take that gamble for Parker/Wiggins if they offer it. Exuum and Smart are pretty damn good too so it's not a loss.

There is an 80% chance that the laker pick is #6-#9. You are absolutely crazy to even consider this.

Yes talent wins, but talent gets paid too, coaches dont. Also do you watch the NBA and note how long it takes top picks to become good players? This isnt the 90s, you are getting 19-20yr olds who are not ready and have high bust potential.

You want to trade thibs for a 20% chance at a 1-2-3 pick? Even if they got the #1 pick at 6% odds, who knows when Wiggins is actually ready to be a main contributor to a title contender. What if you make this deal and get the #9 pick?

This would be an awful, awful trade. Hopefully Garpax laugh at it.

Then package 5, 16, and 19 picks for the 2nd pick and a bench player, draft Wiggins and sign Mirotic.

Rose/DJ

Butler/Filler in trade for #2

Wiggins/MDJ/Snell

Mirotic/Taj

Noah/Greg Smith/Filler

First off they dont have a top 5 pick. They have 75% chance at pick 6 or 7. And even so, 5 & 16 & 19 would not net you #2.

Please just be happy you have a tremendous coach.

I'm pretty sure 5/16/19 would get you a chance at 2

I love Thibs and want to keep him but I'm always looking for ways to add talent.

Maybe 16&19 could get us 12 or 13 and a chance at Stauskas and Gary Harris who fit a need for this team. Guys who have a chance to be as much or more of an addition than exuum/smart and also keep our fantastic coach.

I just want a big guard from this draft who shoots. Butler needs to be moved hes not a good fit for us going forward. Really nice player but we dont need him and cant pay him.

nevermind, apparently the Lakers cant even trade their pick this year.

They can if they get a pick back.

Simmons tweeted this, prediction but still.

@BillSimmons

I feel good about this prediction: Thibs becomes this summer's Doc (traded for a future 1st round pick), then Chicago hires Fred Hoiberg.

Just for comparison the compensation for the Doc trade was for a future first round pick (2015)

The Lakers aren't going to offer a high pick for Thibs when they can get any number of candidates (Ollie, Calipari) for just cash.

Agreed, they aren't giving up what is likely going to be a top 7 pick. It will be a future 1 and maybe a 2nd/cash/ancillary player.

I'm in the middle here, in all honesty. I do think Thibs is one of the 3 best coaches in the league. Behind Pop and in the same range as Doc. I'm unsure as to whether he's a draw for FA or not, but I "think" that he is. At least somewhat. And for that reason alone, I think I'd keep him. Rosé isn't a draw for FA, not in his current state and as much as I love Noah, I doubt he's much of one himself. If Thibs being here gives us a legit shot at Melo, you keep him. Even if he's going to leave in 3 years when his contract is up.

However, if Melo suddenly decides we're not an option? Different story, depends on what the compensation is.

The rumors that Jackson is "demanding" Melo to take a pay cut are silly. If he's going to cite what the Heat did, he's forgetting one major thing: who are the other two superstars who are also taking pay cuts to play with Melo in New York? If he's supposed to take a pay cut to stay with the Knicks while having no certainty of who he'll be playing with, that's an awfully short conversation

What rumors that he's demanding that?

He said something to the effect of hoping that he does/encouraging him to, but that's not a rumor.

Could always wait to trade Thibs to the Lakers after the draft order is revealed

Nope. The Lakers have already dealt their 1st the following year. The only way this could happen is for the Lakers to pick who the Bulls want and make the trade after the draft.
