well I'm still assuming Castro is going to be the opening day SS.

I know...I'm just saying them "letting" him play 2B or 3B isn't what's keeping him out of the big leagues. When it's time for him to play in the big leagues, he'll play at 2B or 3B, probably depending largely on what we see from Mike Olt between now and then.

Well, yeah. I'm talking hypotheticals and possibly getting confused.

Yeah, that's going to be hard to get used to.

Imagine how awesome it would be if Mike Olt turned into gold (or at least a productive player) and then we added Javy and Starlin rebounded.

This team would get interesting pretty damn quick. Not great, but definitely fun to watch.

No reason to start his clock in a lost season.

What is the magic date this year that we would likely want to wait till before starting his clock?

I think it's always June 20-something.

Wasn't that only the case for Rizzo because he had already used up service time in 2011?

I think it's a good amount sooner than that (though I still think Javy stays in AAA until at least June)

Crap, you're right.

A year of service time is equal to 172 days, and there are normally around 183 total days in the major league calendar. This means that if a team wants to keep a prospect from accruing a full year of service time, they simply need to leave that player in the minors for around 15-20 days out of the entire season. For example, the Rays left Evan Longoria in the minors for the first two weeks of the 2008 season; as a result, if Longoria hadn’t signed his long-term contract, he would have been under team control through the 2014 season instead of the 2013 season. Technically, this demotion could happen at any point of the year, but it’s most common for teams to leave a prospect in the minors for the first month or so of the season before calling them up.

Yep, I remembered how crazy it seemed when Jackie Bradley broke camp with the team because of that.

It also depends on how cheap were going to be. If we want to avoid super 2 status, 2.5 months seems like the safe play. My fear is they're a held down through late April '15 because...ya know

if Starlin returned to 3-4 WAR form, Javy, Bryant, and Olt all hit for power.........a very fun offense that pounds pitchers into dust.

Rizzo, too, you guys.

I make a point of it not to include him because I think he was pretty good last year and his disappointing numbers were more luck related than most realize.
