Tools are great, but guys with lots of tools often fail due to anti-tools.

For pitchers, lack of control is the anti-tool.

Maples, Rivero, Black, Ramirez, Vizcaino are all pitchers who appear to have good arms, fast fastballs, and plenty of good stuff.

For players, it's usually hitting. Jackson and Olt have beautiful defense, power, and walking attributes, and Jackson has speed too. But are they so bad at hitting that none of the good stuff matters?

For Jackson, yeah. For Olt, he has a lot more wiggle room because of plus-power and plus-defense at a premium position.

Agree. The chance that Olt's hitting is sufficiently anti-awful to make him useful are better than zero. And certainly better than Jackson's.

Great point.

I don't recall Jackson being known for anything like "beautiful defense."

Beautiful insofar as he can handle a premium position like CF capably, I guess

It's been a long time, but I think the prognosis on Jackson's defense improved as he played professionally, so that he was considered an above average CF or a plus RF. Not to the extent that Olt is a great defender, but in the "tools" sense it was definitely an asset.

I swear we have so many guys do this. It's like they're so eager to be able to run into the wall because they aren't at home that they are overzealous about it or something lol
