I'm not going to freak out about a pre-season game, however the Linebackers still look suspect. I also cannot emphasize how irritated I am to see Chandler Jones have another monster performance and to see Shea steamrolled time and time again. Emery also chose Kyle Long over Trufant which at the time was awful. Trufant now looks (per Matt Miller) like a top 5 CB in all of football. Thanks Phil.

Well...ok...you're acting like Kyle Long turned out to be [expletive] though.

Geez, seriously.

And OL was much more of a problem spot than CB anyways.

Well that's nice but his only other reference points are the Redskins, Bengals, and Jaguars. I'd hope every player would choose the Bears first among those.

Bengals also kinda screwed with his brother too. He's still a phone call away. He's got a future as a QB coach, a college OC, or he can remain in the company he was part of that worked with Bortles, Fales, etc. last summer.

By my math he's played exactly 26 career games of Football at the College AND NFL level. He was considered a project player with both character and experience risk. My point is Phil took an unnecessary gamble. To his credit, the Bears were rumored to be heavily interested in Trufant, but you could have gone with Warford in the second if you wanted a Guard. Warford should have been in the Pro Bowl over Long last year.

I think hes been above average, but I still have a problem with taking a Guard in the first round of a draft for a variety of reasons. Especially when you have other players that are universally considered higher ranked.

We're paying the sins for Angelo being a turd in the draft, but Phil hasn't exactly been the remedy. Sure he's had a few hits the last 3 years (Alshon, Long(?)), but to date he hasn't found 1 good defensive player in the draft and we're still searching for a Safety since Mike Brown.

Ok, but if he'd gone defense we'd be whining about being an all defensive team in an offensive league. Like you said, we're paying for the sins of Angelo here. Emery has built a hell of an offense here, is keeping our QB upright for a change, and rebuilt a defensive line that was flat out horrible last year. Obviously, the D-line needs to prove whether or not he did a good job, but so far this preseason, they're getting a very good rush. The secondary is just letting the receivers get open.

Obviously Emery is going to hear plenty about the Shea pick, and rightfully so...but while Long was drafted higher than projected, he's turned out to be a very good pick, and from all accounts is only going to get better.

Kyle Long is an interesting situation for a lot of reason. I think part of the reason he was drafted was because of his ability to potentially play LT at some point, and OG seems to be more important than OT in this scheme. But he could be one of the top NFL guards as soon as this year. And I agree, I typically don't want to draft a guard in the 1st round. Especially one that's not in the Hutchinson, Iupati, DeCastro, Warmack, Cooper class of elite top 15 type talents. But you can't fault the pick if Long turns out to be an elite player.

FWIW, if I were the Bears GM, I'd probably have waited until the 2nd and taken Larry Warford who went to Detroit early 3rd. My 1st pick would have been between Trufant, Sharif Floyd or Alec Ogletree, with edge to Ogletree probably because of the need last year.

I think he's done a great job in the FA market and finding veterans to round out the roster. But this team needs an infusion of youth and talent in the defense/offense which will trickle down to Special Teams. Our biggest weakness has yet to be addressed (young talent).

Maybe, but I also think a big part of the special teams issue is that DeCamillis is bad. The Cowboys ST was bad when he was there, and has gotten much better since he left.

@BearReport: #Bears not practicing today: Marquess Wilson, Ryan Mundy, Tony Fiammetta, Chris Conte, Brian de la Puente

@BearReport: #Bears CB Kyle Fuller, DE Jared Allen, CB Isaiah Frey and OL Eben Britton all returned to practice today.

3 more cuts to make before this time tomorrow. I'm really hoping to see Kelvin Hayden get cut. He hasn't been very good for 4 years and is 30+ now with no real game action since 2012. Tillman, Jennings, Fuller are cemented as top 3. McManis has played well enough to win the 4th CB spot, IMO. I'd give the 5th and/or 6th spots to younger players like Frey, Hurst or CJ Wilson.....with Al Louis-Jean on the practice squad.

I really wanted to see Brian de la Puente push Garza this year. Apparently that's not happening.

I really want to see our Center get push in the run game. Garza has been bad for awhile now.

Yes, just put him on the same list as Tucker. Guy can't coach his way out of a wet paper bag.

I really wish they'd get rid of these stupid preseason games. They're stupid, [expletive] stupid.

Fun stat. Last year, Dave Toub went to the KC Chiefs to be their Special Teams coordinator, and their weighted DVOA for special teams went from 22nd to 1st overall.

Yeah, really what's the point? Nobody plays the 4th game. Get at most 2 series in the 1st game. Just cut it down to 2 games. Keep them same time of year. Give 2 weeks off before the opener. If the NFL wants to make money off this [expletive], then televise some scrimmages against other teams. Hell, put them in stadiums and make people pay for them. As someone who's about 1200 miles from Bears training camp, I'd much rather watch Cutler in a red jersey practicing situational football (red zone, 2 minute drill, etc) against another team than watch David Fales throw to Josh Bellamy for 3 hours.

Yeah and DeCamilis' ST unit in Dallas went from 15th his last year there to 8th in 2013

So his 4 years in Dallas, they were 14th, 15th, 25th and 15th, then rise to 8th when he leaves. The Bears were 4th, 1st, 1st and 6th in Toub's last 4 years in Chicago and dropped to 11th when he left.

Jordan Palmer sure enjoyed his time with the Bears.

Jordan Palmer @JwPalms · 17h

Coach Trest didn't want players to make predictions about this year. As a former bear I can say that I believe this is a SB team w an MVP QB

I'll be wearing #bears gear and supporting the bears for the rest of my life. Regardless of what happens. This is the best org in the NFL.

Damn, this in a way makes me wish he wasn't cut.

I wonder if they could make a 2 game preseason with some type of summer/development league of 4-5 games in that July lull.

Wants a 18 game regular season, yes. But I'm pretty sure that would mean only 2 preseason games.

I believe that's right, the 2 weeks gained by cutting the preseason would go towards an extra game+bye week.
