I hope the knife was rusty.

And big and sharp and jagged! Haha.

Apparently, if your 1 job is to kick the ball, it's frowned upon if you're not good at it. Bad signing by Angelo. You pretty much never sign a FA punter. The Bears have 2 guys off the street, and the winner of the job will probably outperform Podlesh.

My favorite Podlesh stat:

Jeremy Stoltz ‏@BearReport 7m

#Bears have released P Adam Podlesh. Had 33rd worst gross punting average in league in 2013 (40.6)

For those not in the know, there are 32 NFL teams. He was 33rd in punting (assuming that means 33rd best).

You never draft one. You do sign guys though.

And if you do sign a FA punter, it better be someone awesome like Lechler (when he was younger anyway, but he's still awesome now). If not, just sign a couple UDFA and see who wins. Although I do want Pat O'Donnell and Bears probably have to use one of the 6th rounder to get him.

I meant you don't sign a FA punter in the sense that the guy has been an NFL punter, his contract is up with his former team, and then you pay him money. You don't use a draft pick on a P either. Basically the only way you get a punter on your roster is an undrafted FA, signing a veteran that was cut by his team, or some guy out of nowhere.

You never give a punter his 2nd multi-year contract if his first contract wasn't with you.

Don't really have a place to put this but since we're talking about drafting/signing punters, Todd Sauerbrun. Only the Bears would waste a 2nd round draft pick on him, then let him go after meh seasons and then see him become a 3x pro bowler with another team.

Can't we dwell on more positive things? The offseason is already long enough.

Think that ends the chances Melton comes back.

@Danwiederer: Terms of deal w Ratliff not yet disclosed. But sounds as if it was a modest deal. Not huge investment by Bears. Both sides like the fit.

looks like devin hester will not be with the bears next season...

To all my Chicago people...I can't thank you all enough for my time in Chicago. I've always said I wanted to retire a Chicago Bear but sometimes things don't work out the way we would like. Chicago will always hold a special place in my heart and if I am fortunate enough to break the return record, we will have all broken it together...no matter where I am. Thank you again and God Bless.

fwiw (nothing?), Brad Biggs thinks Melton's chances of returning are unrelated to Ratliff

A 3-Tech and a NT. Makes sense.

Position-wise, yes. I'm not sure financially, especially because of what I expect Melton's price tag to be plus the starting vacancies at CB, LB and possibly 2 DEs.

@mikecwright: Both expected to hit market RT “@leech11: @mikecwright What about Melton and wooten”

He gave us some great memories.

However he had a pretty good last year statistically. Unfortunately the NFL all but made a great KR/PR obsolete with their changes affecting special teams. Average % of touch backs has trended up the last 3 years with last year being 56%.

He was 5th in kickoff return average at 27+. But when you run the ball out 9 yards deep, it's basically a free 19-24 yards to your average if you run straight (as Hester did for a change this year) and get to the 10-15 yard line. You run those out to the 20, which you better do if you're taking it out that deep in the endzone, you lead the league.

Very misleading number, but Devin's calling was always punt returns anyway. Run of the mill KOR, but the best punt returner I've ever seen.
