yes, like when a player is playing with an injury, for example

which Gutierrez was doing

  • "After years of battling health problems including irritable bowel syndrome, a concussion, pain in his throwing arm and now issues with his legs and hips – stemming from a recently discovered genetic disorder that causes inflammation in his joints – it is unclear if Gutierrez will ever be fully healthy."

Sounds like he has some bad autoimmune issues. IBS = autoimmune potential. Genetic disorder causing inflammation in joints = autoimmune potential.

Could be Chron's.

i have UC that i'm on low-dose chemo for, and yeah, once you have one auto-immune disorder, you're like 50% more likely to get another one. i'm totally petrified of MS.

That sucks my man. Immune issues are a hell of a complexity. I'm not sure about the 50% tag, though. The etiology of MS is far more complex than anyone can imagine. Genetics, environmental, behavioral, etc. All of it. MS isn't necessarily an auto-immune disease. There's conflicting evidence for it and against it being labeled "autoimmune." Fear no more.

I think the 50% number is something my surgeon threw out at me but he's weird. And thanks for the MS info, although PSC would be a drag, too.

So let's say they pick up Guttierez, Rizzo continues to develop and Castro bounces back...Baez, at some point, replaces Barney's anemic production in the lineup (seems almost impossible for that not to be an upgrade)

C - Castillo

1B - Rizzo

2B - Barney/Baez/Valbuena?

SS - Castro

3B - Valbuena/some other guy (Baez?)

LF - Lake

CF - Sweeney/Guttierez

RF - Schierholtz/Ruggiano

am I crazy or is that not a terrible lineup (assuming Castro and Rizzo, to varying extents, perform better) by today's standards?

Just spitballing... High .700's OPS out of CF, .800's in right. no idea what we're getting out of lake, tbh... our 3B situation was very productive last year

Good to very good defense just about everywhere.

I think Olt gets a shot to hold 3rd, If he can hold it down, then Barney/Valbueno is potentially a great platoon at 2nd based on their splits. Same with Right or center with Ruggiano. It's potentially much better than last year. The problem with your projections is no one in the lineup has ever posted an .800 ops in a full season, So it seems hard to say that's going to happen next year.

A very interesting article by Mark Simon of ESPN.com involving a new stat (at least one that I've never heard of) on the Cubs signing of one Justin Ruggiano. The stat is WHAV or well-hit average.

One of the proprietary figures that major league teams have at their disposal is information from video-scouting services -- such as Inside Edge, Baseball Info Solutions and Stats LLC -- related to a stat known in the industry as "well-hit average," which is abbreviated as WHAV.

WHAV is pretty much what it sounds like -- how often a player ended an at-bat with a hard-hit ball, regardless of whether it resulted in a hit.

The video trackers at these companies rate each batted ball. In the case of Inside Edge, they use hard, medium and soft as their three categories for classifying contact.

To sum up the article, Simon provides a pretty strong statistical argument for why Justin Ruggiano will have a rebound season and may be more than just the short end of a RF platoon.

So there's a few guys that hit it harder than everyone else, then the rest of the top 30 is bunched within about 15 points.
