Week 15: Bears (7-6) @ Browns (4-9) Noon, FOX

Posted

If Cutler and Weeden aren't ready to go this week, this game becomes a who's who of recent Bears backup QB history.

Jason Campbell would start, his backup Caleb Hanie.

Should be interesting to see how this game plays out. I don't think the Browns should be favored. They can't score with the Bears, and they give up their fair share of points, despite being decent in yards against. Browns also aren't a good running team at all. And it's not like they have the ability/history there like Baltimore or the Rams did before they gashed the Bears. If you can't keep a 7th straight player from going over 100 yards rushing, there's no excuses. Campbell has also thrown for like 350 in his last 3 games. Bears can't allow that either.

McCown has faced the 22nd, 21st, 17th, 9th, 19th, 31st, and 32nd ranked overall defenses. The passing defense numbers are 27th, 21st, 25th, 14th, 22nd, 30th, and 32nd.

Cutler faced 8, 31, 12, 17, 6, 10, 22, and 17 in overall. In passing, it's 8, 30, 7, 25, 3, 15, 27, and 25.

Overlap with the Redskins game, but McCown has faced 1 out 7 teams that have a top half of the league defense, either overall or passing. Cutler is 4-8 in facing top half overall D's, with 2 more against number 17. 4-8 in top half against the pass as well.

I think we need to franchise Jay and drop an early(top 3 round) pick on a QB in the draft. While I think it's very likely Trestman's offense will lend success to many, in no way would I be comfortable letting Jay go and handing it over to McCown.

All this does is make me wish that Cutler could've padded his numbers feasting on these shitty defenses. :(

You also have to remember that Cutler started most of his games during the first few games of A) a new head coach, B) a new offensive coordinator, coaching staff and scheme, and C) a completely rebuilt offensive line with 4 new players, 2 rookies starting

McCown has also had to play under these conditions but after 7 games of acclimation.

I started to put together a very similar post about the defensive rankings earlier and got busy at work and forgot about it. That's the element that Biggs really needed to include in his article the other day.

The good thing is both Emery and Trestman are very analytical. Plus, I really, really, really want to see BOTH Jay and Brandon playing for a contract at the same time, assuming Cutler gets tagged.

The Browns do not run the ball well, but as my fantasy team can attest, Josh Gordon has been an absolute monster. Did you see what he did to Aqib Talib last week? Talib has shut down good receivers before too. Gordon is just a monster. He might be as physically talented as Calvin Johnson. He has 71 catches for 1400 yards and 8 TDs, with Brandon Weeden, Brian Hoyer, and Jason Cambell throwing him the ball in only 11 games. Bowman and Jennings have played well recently, but our safeties remain a dumpster fire. If the front 4 can't generate a pass rush and Campbell or Weeden has enough time to chuck it deep, Gordon can change the game in a hurry.

Yeah, Gordon is a beast. I'm expecting an AJ Green type game from him, but that's gotta be all. Jordan Cameron is a bad matchup too, but stopping the run of a team that can't run is the key. They have not won much being 1-dimensional since they don't have a ton of weapons.

With so many young stud receivers emerging this year, I'd be interested to see how people would rank the top 5-10 WRs currently in the game.

I don't think Cutler is getting tagged.

Briggs was the best player on the Bears defense this year. Easily. He was the leading tackler at the time of his injury (he had 64 to Major Wright's 57). With him in the lineup, opponents averaged 4.04 yards per carry. Without him, 6.32. They averaged 117.2 rush yards per game against the Bears with Briggs, and 203.3 rush yards per game against the Bears without Briggs. They had one rush for 10 yards or more every 7.25 tries when Briggs played, and they've had one for every 4.9 carries without Briggs.

I made fun of the experts who said Briggs was a bigger loss than Cutler.

Has anyone been listening to Waddle and Silvy this afternoon?

From Twitter it looks as though they've been ripping on Cutler or at least taking McCown in the debate. And now the interesting thing...yesterday they were promoting the Jay Cutler Show as if Jay was going to be on it today, but apparently now BMarsh is going to be on the show.

#Bears QB Jay Cutler has cancelled his appearance today w/@WaddleandSilvy that was originally scheduled for 2 p.m. on @ESPN1000.

I wasn't listening today, but Waddle and Silvy starts at 2, so it couldn't be in response to anything they said on air. Before them Carmen and Jurko were definitely talking up the "debate" but not really taking sides in the limited bit I heard.

Occam's razor says that it's probably a scheduling thing. Jay's normally on at 5 PM on Monday so Tuesday at 2 may have had something unexpected come up.

These were the first 2 tweets I saw when I searched for 'The Jay Cutler Show"

After listening to @WaddleandSilvy hard to believe we'll hear another Jay Cutler show again

So today's @waddleandsilvy show pretty much ends the Jay Cutler relationship/show? Why would Cutler come on this show. Honest question.

That doesn't mean this city isn't stupid.

Everyone is freaking out over a guy who is going to turn 35 in the offseason. It's insane. And people are refusing to consider logical, reasoned points.

This city is so stupid.

Every NFL city would be reacting the exact same way under the exact same circumstances.

Doesn't make it any less obnoxious. Plus I'd have to think that some of the other major cities have at least one mainstream voice of reasons when it comes to these types of things. Maybe not, but it just feels like Chicago is packed the gills with nothing but meatball sports reporters and analysts.

Some people are doing that.

Some people are just eager to get rid of Cutler and aren't all that excited about McCown, just about the fact that the offense is doing great without him so they consider it evidence that he's expendable.

To be fair, Boers and Bernstein haven't taken the bait. I don't think anybody at 670 has.

ESPN pundits are the worst and ESPN has quickly turned into the mainstream Bleacher Report.

I gotta plead ignorance on B&B; I've heard them brought up before when it comes to their opinions not being the usual meatballery, but I can never get past the one that sounds like a huge doof and always does the "by cracky" or whatever the [expletive] nonsense.
