I think it's a real possibility LeBron leaves when he can. Bosh is marginalized there (and weird) and Wade is already getting the Tim Duncan treatment. Does LeBron want to go 5 more years there? Miami, outside of the Mourning years, and when Wade was young and Shaq came there for a tax break, has been an afterthought of a franchise for its existence.

I can't see Wade taking a big paycut on his next contract, and what motivation does LeBron have to stay and put up with a roster of fill-ins, a crippled Wade and Bosh?

Miami has been an afterthought except for like 1/3 of its existence? Who hasn't been other than the Lakers and Celtics?

they advanced past the first round of the nba playoffs 5 times in 22 seasons pre-lebron. the point is that they're not some amazingly professional franchise that's constructed to reliably good for years and years. They were just in the right place at the right time ... once this lbj-wade-bosh core is past its prime, which could be as early as next year the way wade is going, what's going to make lebron stay? Is he really going to want to carry a roster of Bosh, 40 games of wade and chalmers for 82 games?

Seems very interesting but I wouldn't be surprised if not enough teams approve it.

MAJOR downfall comes when looking at when guys come out of college. Let's say LeBron 2.0 comes along and plays for Duke starting in 2020. The next 3 years #1 pick holding teams are: Toronto, Milwaukee, and Lakers. Does that kid stay in school for 3 years until he can be on the Lakers? Or, worse yet, play 1 season and then take 2 years off to train or goes and plays in Europe and comes back to be picked by a team of his choice (in this situation, the Lakers).

Also, now you could have teams tanking entire 5 year stretches instead of just 1 or 2 seasons.

I still think it has some legs and am not entirely opposed to it, but there are some big time downfalls.

Players aren't going to postpone free agency by 2 years just to manipulate what team gets them, it'll cost them millions of dollars plus the risk of injury.

And teams definitely aren't going to tank for 5 years until they get a certain pick, that doesn't make any sense. Their draft pick is guaranteed, there's no reason to be intentionally bad in the interim.

Yeah it is definitely interesting and seems to have benefits but also downfalls. There probably is not a perfect way to stop tanking/teams being bad/increase parity.

For example this year there are clearly teams tanking (or avoiding moves that could have made them a little better) but were there enough moves or talent available to add out there that the Bucks/Jazz/76ers/Magic/Etc. could have made to really be all that much better (at best, imo, they could have made moves on the margins adding 10 or less wins)? I don't think enough talent exists that every team can be competitive every year or even attempt to be competitive. There's going to be bad teams and likely multiple every year regardless of the rules put in place. Look at the Cavs, Nets, Knicks they clearly made moves with the intention to not tank and they are all awful.

I get that they want to eliminate teams purposely trying to tank but I don't see this necessarily creating more parity.

According to a league source, the Rockets had preliminary talks with the Nets last week about Omer Asik and Jeremy Lin. Talks never gained any steam, but the source said the Rockets were doing their due diligence and Williams' name came up. The Nets balked because one of the main reasons Pierce and Garnett agreed to a trade to Brooklyn was to play with Williams, according to the source. Williams, who signed a five-year, $98 million extension in 2012, was playing well upon returning from an ankle injury, and the Nets were looking better.

Should the Nets revisit talks with the Rockets or another contending team and consider trading a key piece like Williams, Garnett or Pierce now that Lopez is out for the season? It might be worth contemplating because this $190 million roster that was supposed to be a Rolls-Royce now is an expensive luxury car with a transmission problem.

A week late but I just saw this.

The only way to increase parity would be to eliminate super teams. I've heard the idea that your 2nd highest paid player can only make a certain percentage of your highest paid player, thus eliminating teams with 2 max contract players. There's no way the players association will go for it, but it's a good idea for the most part

Eliminate penalties for going over the cap to sign your own players. Allow teams to offer contracts to their own players (or even just one player every few years) that can relatively dwarf what other teams can offer on the free market.

The secret isn't to destroy super teams, its to allow teams to create them naturally. If lebron or Chris Paul or Durant want to leave their teams, give them a reasonable reason not to. Is lebrom gonna take 5/85 or whatever from Miami if the cavs can offer him 5/125?

Isn't that the way things are now? LeBron's Miami deal was technically a sign and trade.

Teams have Bird rights of going over max, but it still counts against the cap. If a team could offer above max and only have max count against the cap, they'd be in better position to surround their best player with other good players.

Teams can go over and offer slightly more to their own guys, but it's not enough to make a difference if the guy really wants to leave. Let them make the guy make a tough decision.

Two true statements:

James Harden scored 27 points against Memphis tonight.

James Harden made two field goals against Memphis tonight.

They did take away Bird Rights for S&T in the new CBA. In a repeat of 2010, the guys would be giving up quite a bit to leave.

If you really want to get rid of super teams, you'd get rid of MAX contracts completely. Nothing else would be as simple or as effective. But why would the league?
