there's no way kesler gets 2 first round picks. ryan miller only got 1+ filler. i know miller is a rental, but still.
I think it was 2 picks...1st and 3rd rounder

Correct.

A proposed deal would send Kesler to the Penguins in exchange for center Brandon Sutter, two 2014 draft picks — likely a first- and third-round — and the Canucks' choice of defensemen Simon Despres or Brian Dumoulin, the sources said.

Miller got the Sabres way more than filler. Stewart is first or second line forward, Halak is a good, young goalie, and Carrier is a B-level prospect who should be a good third line scorer when he's ready.

Edit - Kesler is worth a similar return, IMO

So what would be a similar return? 1st, 3rd, Tuvo/Saad, maybe Bickell?

I'm in on Kesler. Not really sure the Hawks need him to win another Cup, but it certainly wouldn't hurt. I think it would take a lot less than people think to acquire him. It seems to me that trades for stars aren't taking as much to get as they used to. The Iginla trade wasn't a huge haul from Pittsburgh to Carolina last year.

Carolina was lucky to get anything out an Iginla trade since he played for the Flames.

The Hawks can afford to give up draft picks as they have lots of depth forwards at Rockford likely could play for a lot of NHL teams. Denault, McNeil, LeBlanc and Teravainen could all compete for the big club next season.

Bickell, Clendening, Hawks '14 1st, 2nd and the 3rd round pick they got from Florida would seem like a solid offer for Kesler. Van may have to also take Regin and send a 5th round pick. I could also see Shaw maybe getting included in the deal.

From a cap perspective I don't see how you get around including Bickell. IMO, Bickell, one of the A or high-B level forwards, plus at least a 1 and 2 gets is a good package, but I'm guessing Vancouver is also going to want a forward who can step in right away and score.

I keep coming back to Bickell, Teuvo, and some combination of picks. We'd need to throw in some other NHLer to make the money work.

Unfortunately, I can't see someone like Tortorella having a lot of interest in a player like Teuvo. He'd probably love Kruger, but we're pretty thin at center as it is (and we'd need to throw more in if that was the case).

How is Kesler as a two way center?

How is Kesler as a two way center?

Kesler won the Selke in 2010-2011.

so pretty good then?

As a relatively novice hockey fan, I can never remember which rewards are which. Or if they are merit or reputation based.

The Selke is for best defensive forward. Toews won the award last year.

IMO Kesler is an above average defensive forward.

By "best defensive forward" they actually mean best defensive center. You're talking Toews, Bergeron and Dyatsuk country. Reputation no doubt plays a part. It's hard to say whether Kesler can play Selke level defense these days but he's a perfect fit. Going from Handzus to Kesler would be like going from Neifi Perez to Nomar. It guarantees nothing but OMG would it be fun and make them tough to beat.

halak has been average and he's not very young. i definitely don't think stewart is a first line forward.

NBC’s primetime coverage of Saturday night’s NHL Stadium Series game between the Pittsburgh Penguins and Chicago Blackhawks (8-11:15 p.m. ET) from Soldier Field in Chicago averaged 2.8 million viewers and produced a 1.7 HH rating, making it the most-watched and highest-rated NHL regular-season game, excluding Winter Classics and regional coverage, since the advent of People Meters (1987), according to Fast National data from The Nielsen Company.

too bad Pittsburgh's play and the snow on the ice made the game kind of crappy to watch for a person who didn't really have a rooting interest

I'm guessing the snow aspect was what got a lot of people tuning in. People texting their friends..."are you seeing this hockey game in the snow? They can't even move the puck in it...check it out!"

It may not have been the ideal showcase for the best hockey there is to offer, but i don't think anyone expects that out of these stadium games. It's a spectacle.

I understand. The outdoor games are not really geared for guys like me who are going to watch a game between two of the best teams in the league anyway.

I'm tired of the outdoor games. The novelty has totally worn off, the presentation is horrible, there might as well not be a crowd there (as far as the TV presentation goes), etc.

you're just mad because there hasn't been an outdoor game at Ohio Stadium yet

I love the outdoor games, and the football games in baseball stadiums, and the aircraft carrier basketball games. I think it's a nice change. It shouldn't really be done any more than it already is in any of those cases though.

So what if the novelty wears off? I'd like it to move past being a novelty item, and into an actual thing.

Loved that game Saturday. The snow, the cold, everything.
