The NFL is urgently discussing a new scheduling formula that would include a three-game preseason and could also feature an expanded postseason field from 12 to 14 teams, sources league sources told ESPN NFL Insider Chris Mortensen.

I could get behind this idea.

I've always been in favor of reducing the number of preseason games I have to pay for. The playoffs are always fun to watch and adding one team on each side will increase the drama in my opinion.

The problem with reducing preseason games is the contracts most teams have with their stadiums that require a certain number of games to be played there every year and reducing the preseason games causes problems with that.

Would this mean just one bye per conference?

I generally don't like expanding playoffs under any circumstances. 9-7 teams already routinely get into the postseason in the NFL. That's plenty IMO.

10-6 teams sometimes miss the playoffs under the current system, though.

I'm for it. I don't have that big a concern over 9-7 teams making it. It's already happening anyway. That 4th preseason game is pretty much a lost weekend -- I'd rather have another weekend of meaningful football, even if it does open the door to a few more mediocre teams getting into the postseason.

I think thats the only way 7 teams would make sense. I like that, the less byes the better IMO

Agreed. This makes the #1 seed actually meaningful. I'm all for it. I just really hope they never go to 16 teams.

That's one playoff expansion from half the league making it in.

True. Didn't it used to be 28 teams w/ 12 though?
