k guys, as much as I love gifs (they bring joy to the hearts of all), how much do you think he'll actually get? And what would you pay to get him?

No way the Cubs go after Cano. I'd love to get the guy but they just got out from under Soriano's huge contract and I highly doubt they jump at the first chance to sign another one considering where they are with the rebuild.

Alfonso Soriano is 37 and has basically been a 29 WAR player. He's had two seasons with a WAR above 5.

Robinson Cano, by contrast, is 30 and is already a 45 WAR player. He's had five seasons with a WAR above 5.

Where did I imply that Soriano was a better sign than Cano would be? What I clearly said to anyone with half a brain is that the Cubs won't sign Cano because of the size of the contract he will demand. If they do get involved, it will be to inflate the price for whopever does sign him. If I'm wrong, I will happily eat my words.

Do you think he'll have five more? You can't fall too much in love with what a guy has done in the past, especially when they're going to be on the wrong side of 30. I'd be in on him at 5-7 years, but beyond that and I'm not interested. His numbers dwarf what Soriano has posted, but so will his AAV.

Theo has said they aren't interested in paying a premium for past performance that isn't likely to be repeated, so unless the market for Cano is surprisingly tepid, it's not going to happen.

I don't want the Cubs to sign him, nor do I expect them to do so. Just amused at the silly comparison to Soriano in any capacity when he could have just said "I don't think they're going to sign any huge FA contracts."

I'm not sure what he'll get, but I'm very much looking forward to Jay-Z's attempt at being an agent mirroring Master P's attempt at being an agent.

He's partnered up with CAA. I'll be shocked if he's not extremely successful myself.

Jay-Z does know the sports agent business apparently.

”I know about budgets. I was a drug dealer.” He continued, “To be in a drug deal, you need to know what you can spend, what you need to re-up. Or if you want to start some sort of barbershop or car wash—those were the businesses back then. Things you can get in easily to get out of [that] life. At some point, you have to have an exit strategy, because your window is very small; you’re going to get locked up or you’re going to die.”

Meh. Cano'd better hope that he's just a face and a name and that someone actually qualified is doing the work. These execs deal with Scott Boras, Tom Condon and Art Tellum; do you really think they won't be able to work over someone with no experience in this field?

This could turn out gloriously bad.

I don't think he's doing any actual negotiating. Pretty sure he's more of a spokesman/ambassador of whatever entity was created by him and CAA partnering. He's no more than a guy to go get athletes to sign with the firm and leak/say stuff to the press about negotiations with player x and team y. Pretty sure Jay-Z/CAA is going to send in a guy to negotiate that is a real agent with the necessary experience and qualifications. Don't you need to have a law degree/pass some sort of exam or get a qualification to be an agent these days anyways?

Also what do agents get 3-5% (part of which goes into the agency)? Doesn't seem like it would be worth Jay-Z's time to be spending weeks-months intertwined in negotiations. He can make more money in less or same amount of time by acquiring/partnering with other companies, doing endorsements, making albums, touring, being featured in songs, etc.

Brodie Van Wagenen is the negotiator in the Cano deal. He's handled nine figure deals before. This is a brand for Jay Z, who did pass all the certifications and sold his small share of the Nets, so he can enter basketball as well. He wants to do all 3 sports. He's actively recruiting Puig and Cespedes currently. It's much different than Master P. jay-Z is smart enough to surround himself with super agents, while P wasn't. He'll sit back and let his name grab some clients, let other people do the actual work and make some serious cash.

Who was the rape-y No Limit guy? Was it Silkk or Mystikal?

It was Mystikal. Silkk I believe is Master P's brother?? C-Murder is another brother as well I think? Man... this is making me reliving the junior high/high school days. Haha

Yes, the great lineage of New Orleans rappers. Because everyone was wondering...

Master P is currently around town speaking to troubled youth in high schools. I assume he does not enter the gyms in his golden tank. His brother C Murder changed back to his birth name a few years back as he was awaiting trial for, you guessed it, murder. He saw the light in jail supposedly but the jury was not impressed. Claims of racism abounded.

Mystikal is putting out some badass music lately collaborating with acts around town.

Lil Wayne, who ironically had his life saved by an NOPD officer when he accidentally shot himself as a teenager, is still rapping about drugs, drug money and bitches.

And Anthony Rizzo is getting in trouble for playing his songs during BP.

Texas reportedly checked in on acquiring Cano from the Yankees earlier in the year, but was told he was unavailable. Now that the bidding is open to all teams, things could play out a little differently. According to Marchand, behind the Rangers in the running for Cano (non-Yankees division) are the Dodgers, Phillies, Mariners and Cubs.

And move Kinsler to LF? Not it would matter if that actually happen.

Master P has a soon to be hot (when she's of age) daughter starring on a Nickelodeon show.
