I view those guys as being more "polished", though. Jimenez was supposed to be big upside and more raw. I figured they'd keep him in the academy this fall/winter.

16-year old Venezuelan shortstop Gleyber Torres made his profesional game debut today, playing shotstop for three innings and getting two at-bats. He struck out his first time up (an ugly swing on a 3-2 breaking ball), and grounded out 4-3 in his final AB. He had one defensive chance and threw the ball away.

...

RHP Armando Rivero got an inning of work in today's game, in preparation for the start of the Arizona Fall League (AFL) season next Tuesday. (He is one of four Cubs pitchers who have been assigned to the Mesa Solar Sox). The 25-year old righthander's fastball was consistently clocked at 95-96 MPH today, and he used his hard splitter as his "chase" pitch.

I'm irrationally convinced that Rivero is going to be our shut-down reliever within a year or two.

i'm 100% convinced of this too.

@billazbbphotog: Eloy Jimenez shows nice opposite field power on ball to right center in #Cubs intrasquad.

Jose Arias dominates, Dillon Maples not so much. Tyler Alamo hit a HR and Jacob Hannemann returns to action for the first time in two months.

Arizona Phil thinks Kane County's OF next year from left to right will be Dunston Jr-Hannemann-Balaguert (I'm sure Encarnacion and Martin will have something to say about that).

@billazbbphotog: Juan Carlos Paniagua in now during #Cubs intrasquad. Up to 95 in dominant inning.

Thanks for these updates, cal. Great to hear that Vizcaino is up to 45 pitches already, and looked good. Paniagua, Arias, fun to get positive stuff on all of them.

Torres doesn't appear to have gotten anything out of the infield in any of the box scores I've noticed him in.

@LoneStarDugout: Big arm strength from #Cubs RHP prospect Juan Carlos Paniagua at instructs today. Working 92-96, T97. Flashing plus life.

@cdgoldstein: @LoneStarDugout Feel like I often see "electric" when reading about him. Feel the same? Do they have to push him considering his age?

@LoneStarDugout: @cdgoldstein It's good stuff. Secondaries are behind the fastball but they flash.

I wonder if they might try to bring up Baez and Bryant around the same time (August or September) next year to lessen the pressure on either one?

Yeah, if that doesn't hold Baez back. Both will dictate when they get called up. If Baez isn't up til Aug/Sept, it's probably because his 2013 is anywhere from mediocre to disasterous. But I don't think they'll intentionally hold one back or rush one to get them up to the majors together.

If our infield suddenly went from Rizzo/Barney/Castro/Valbuena to Rizzo/Baez/Castro/Bryant, I wouldn't complain.

Paniagua started and pitched well. Jen-Ho Tseng returned from his leg injury and pitched well. Frandy de la Rosa continues to struggle.

Arodys Vizcaino pitched in an intrasquad game:

Vizcaino is presently on the Cubs MLB 60-day DL rehabbing from elbow woes that extend back to Tommy John Surgery a year ago last April. He worked 1.1 IP in the intrasquad game, allowing three runs on three hits (two singles and a triple), and while he really wasn't fooling anybody (although he did strike out one batter looking), at least he's pitching in a game.

Olt will be making a push for ROY and GG at that point.

Vizcaino allowed a walk and struck out one in his one inning of work (18 pitches 12 strikes). His fastball velocity was clocked consistently at 93-94 MPH, and his command was fair.

Zasztryzny, Skulina, Frazier, Wilson and Masek followed Vizcaino and no one gave up an earned run.

All of the Cubs pitchers who threw today pitched well and were pounding the strike zone.

Zastryzny absolutely carved-up the Giant hitters (striking out four af the last five men he faced - all four swinging), changing speeds on his fastball and using his breaking ball to put 'em away. I'm not sure if he was throwing a slider or a curve (maybe both?), but it was a VERY impressive outing.

Skulina is a big dude (6'6 225) and he was throwing a low 90's fastball with movement and a plus-slider (getting one swinging "K" and two more looking), with an occasional slow curve to keep the hitters guessing.

Masek (who has a similar frame as Roy Oswalt) was a bit more hittable and a bit less in command than Zastrynsky and Skulina, but he did retire all six men he faced (6-3, K, F-9, 6-3, 6-3, F-9). Masek's stuff isn't in the same class as Skulina's and Zastrynsky's, but it's not bad.

LHP Sam Wilson struck out the side (two looking and one swinging) on ten pitches, throwing fastball/slider/fastball/slider/fastball/slider combinations to freeze the Giant hitters. Wilson is being primed as a lefty reliever and he could be pretty good. BTW, Tyler Ihrig (who did not pitch today) is another lefty 2013 draft pick at Instructs who is apparently being groomed for the bullpen, and he combines a rather pedestrian fastball (I believe it's a cutter or a sinker, maybe both) with a "Bugs Bunny" curveball (you can take three swings before it reaches home plate).

Scott Frazier had one strikeout (swinging) and two busted bat 4-3 ground-outs in his eight-pitch inning today.

Jacob Hannemann had an RBI double.
