After a horrific 1st inning in which Loux walked the bases loaded on the first three batters he faced but got out of it allowing only one run on a groundball out and striking out the next two. Loux has righted the ship going allowing just two hits, no walks while K'ing 4 in the next 4 frames.

Some other news: #IowaCubs manager said injured INF Josh Vitters was hitting off a tee at extended ST. Still hasn't played in games. #Cubs

How cute. My 5-year-old hits off a tee AND gets to play in the games.

Almora showed a strong arm, gunning down the WI leadoff hitter at the plate. The next hitter doubles to make it 1-0 Rattlers over Cougars

i feel like almora has had a few OF assists already. Lord knows where i'd find that stat though.

absolute beautiful throw, right on the money on the fly, got him by several steps.

vogelbach has these weird idiosyncrasies. he draws a v in the dirt and then covers it with dirt before stepping in the batter's box. also, he draws things in the foul lines on the infield and then wipes them out. he's constantly doing this. wouldn't sign autographs before the game, but i got Rock (who looked like he could barely walk before the game), Candelario (i asked him if it's Hymer or Jamer, and he said Jamer, forgot he was from New York, was expecting an accent), and Almora on my hat.

Vogelbach looks really uncomfortable in the field, i didn't understand it until i saw it first hand. it's like he hasn't played baseball his entire life. His lack of agility may actually serve him better in the outfield as weird as that sounds.

Hernandez made a fantastic play in the hole and flashed a really nice arm in the second or third. Almora looked very confident in the box, kind of reminds me of Nomar without the nose. Reggie Golden is built like a [expletive] ice box, he's as wide as he is tall. Rosario's breaking stuff looked remedial, but his fastball was low 90's.

I had a buddy take his kid to a game a few weeks ago and they asked Vogelbach to sign and he walked away from him. My buddy said he kinda carried himself smugly and seemed like a prick.

Impossible, Vogelbach is a good christian.

he prayed in the outfield for a while before blowing all of us off on his way to the dugout.

I can't believe Slide Castro Slide has yet to talk about Kevin Encarnacion this season.

Are you sure that he was blowing you off and not hustling to the concession stands? I hear those MWL parks run out of beats early and often.

I'm still waiting for him to suggest calling up Balaguert or something.

Why bother getting a DH with a sub 800 OPS in low A to sign something?

Well I think they were just trying to get a lot of the players to sign, and to be honest I dont think his 7 yr old cares what someone's OPS, WAR, or future position on the diamond is. Just trying to get players to sign for his kid, ya know

An enjoyable night in Salem.

Notes

1) I like Hanneman. Solid single in the first, Just missed two homeruns (he was trying to take advantage of a steady breeze to right). One ball that just missed going out would have been a grand slam. But when a man was on second and the game was on line he delivered with a solid single. He seems to have a good idea of what he is doing at the plate. He looked good in center, but he really wasn't tested. Clearly one of the better players on the field, but as a third round pick who is 22 he should be.

2) Dunston has clearly progressed from last year. He seems to have gone to the same school as Vogelbach in that he signs his name in the ground as he walks up to the plate. A very good athlete, but sometimes I wish he would focus more on the game and less on his style.

3) Penalvar - I like his range and arm at short. Good instincts and a good athlete, but he is young for this league and it shows. A high throw to first was his only error, but he misplayed a couple of other balls that were ruled hits (and by NWL standards they should have been hits.) But my impression is that he will be a very good SS, but he is still raw. A bit over matched at the plate at this point, but again my impression is that he will hit as the season progresses. I will be keeping an eye on him.

4) Pugeliese has clearly progressed from last year. He was missing his spots in the first and he was lucky to get out of it only giving up one run, but by the third he was coasting. He will be at KC next year and should do well.

5) Lockhart was the player of the game (if not Hanneman or Pugeliese) three solid singles (on base 4 times), scored the winning run and played a very solid second base.

6) Balaguert intrigued me. Excellent numbers, a big man, he has this presence....you just know if he makes contact it is going a long way. Normally I discount players that were at a higher level last year (Peoria), but his birthdate is 1/9/93, so he is age appropriate for this league (actually on the young side)...

Wonder where he gets that from? :-k

When I first started following the Cubs in 95, Shawon Dunston and Brian McRae were my favorite players. So it would be pretty awesome if Shawon Jr. ended up being a thing.

You'll find that I've never suggested calling up an actual prospect just for the sake of doing so, especially not a low level.

I only do that with AAAA slug monsters at the off chance that they can be at least a serviceable bat off the bench. And I've even sworn off those.
