Is it reasonable to expect Alcantara to be our starting 2B next year after the period passes to get the extra year of control a monthish into the season?

Very unlikely, IMO. I think 2015 is the year for the "ready for MLB but maybe waiting a month for service time reasons" routine.

I think it's a bit more likely than that. It could depend on:

1) how much he can mash in the PCL

2) how much he can refine his approach

3) his defensive development

4) how competitive is the 2014 team?

5) does Barney get traded between now and 2014 deadline?

6) does Barney suck?

7) does Watkins show enough to get a shot at holding down the job for a while?

There are several ways to answer that combination of questions that would lead to an earlier callup.

I don't know, from what I've seen, he has a lot of trouble with off speed pitches. I can see the talent but there is still a lot to work on at the plate.

Giving him a bit more than a full year to work on that could still have him up after the trading deadline next year.

I agree that it is more likely that he arrives in 2015. However, he could force the issue if he improves as much next year as he has in the past two seasons.

"Up after the trading deadline next year" is very different from "expect Alcantara to be our starting 2B next year after the period passes to get the extra year of control a monthish into the season".

True, but it is also very different from "I think 2015 is the year for the "ready for MLB but maybe waiting a month for service time reasons" routine."

It's so easy to forget how young Bryce Harper is:

@BenBadler: Only nine players in the Futures Game are younger than Bryce Harper.

Just ridiculous.

Crazy, I would imagine a decent amount are older than Trout too.

Isn't anybody re-airing this game? I forgot to set my DVR for it.

I bet it may be on real late on ESPN/ESPN2 sometime tonight or like 3am monday morning. MLB might have it up on their website at some point too
