Well, I didn't expect anyone to actually break it down by specific seasonal records. And like I said, the Cubs had a less terrible run over the timeframe. Hardly anything to lord over another fanbase when the scattered bright spots have been surrounded by dreck.

Please show your math. How is the Cubs' 2003 so much crazy better than the Brewers' 2011?

The answer to this is pretty obvious to me.

In 2003, it felt like the beginning of a decade of domination for the Cubs. Sure, we had an aging offensive core in Sosa + Alou, but we had great young players in Prior, Wood, Zambrano, Patterson & Aramis. We had the #1 farm system in baseball with the promise of a full pipeline of talent on the way.

in 2011, the Brewers fans knew their window was about closed. They were going to lose Fielder, they had sold the farm to make their push and it was win now or not at all.

That I agree with. Though it went to [expletive] pretty quick, so when talking in terms of looking back over a 20-30 year timespan that can only mean so much.

@lencasperCubs moves so good that many people don't even know what they did today. Focus on players traded is missing the pt. Fun to watch process.

You are a very dull human if you think it is fun to watch the process that has been going on here.

Agreed. My buddy is a Giants fan, and we were discussing how the Giants have "tortured" their fans the past few years with all their close games. You want torture?? Try being a Cubs fan for over 30 years, then get back to me.

I can think of a lot worse teams to be a fan of than the Cubs over the last 30 years.

A lot? I sure can't.

Over the last thirty years, the Orioles, Tigers, Royals, Mets, Twins, Dodgers, A's, Reds, Blue Jays, Braves, Yankees, Marlins, Diamondbacks, Angels, Red Sox, White Sox, Cardinals, Phillies, and Giants have won World Series. That's nineteen of the other twenty-nine teams. Of the remaining ten, the Padres, Indians, Astros, Rockies, Rays, and Rangers have at least played in a World Series.

That means, in the last thirty years, only the Cubs, Mariners, Nationals/Expos, Brewers (World Series appearance in 1982 though), and Pirates have not played in a World Series. It hasn't been a lot of fun being a Cubs fan. And the current era is not yet helping matters.

Corey Patterson was never a great player. He had one very good half in 03 and after that, he went from good to flat out brutal.

He was a 3-win player in 2004 and a 4-win player in 2006.

People just keep providing examples of underestimating how good Patterson was for a while.

You said he was great. I never heard any Cubs fan or baseball people in general say Patterson was a great player. He ended up being a bust considering the amount on hype surrounding him.

Yes. I said he was a fairly good player but great? No. Not even close. And I was a big CP fan.

But, Tim was talking about right after '03. At that point he just had that very good half season, was still very young, and was still very hyped. It makes sense to include him like he did.

so this card wasn't worth the $30 I spent 10 years ago while waiting until 5 a.m. to snipe it on ebay?

There have been plenty of players who had good half seasons. Tim said Patterson was a great

player. I simply pointed out that not one person I know ever said Patterson was a great player after 03.

Sure, plenty of us thought he might turn out to be great, but he was not a great player at the time.

He had a few good seasons in the Majors after 03 and then, well, all that other stuff happened. Mainly sucking.

None of the players he listed are or were actually "great" if you're going by some kind of lofty, baseball superstar standard. His point obviously was that the Cubs' future looked bright after 2003 because they had a collection of what looked like good or better players and he happened to use the word "great."

We thought Patterson was great at the end of the 2003 season. I think thats the point he was making.

Well, problem #1 is they tried to have him go 2 innings. They brought him in for the 5th and got out of that (gave up a hit and a walk) but then inexplicably brought him back out for the 6th.

"Was that wrong? Should I not have done that? I tell you, I gotta plead ignorence on this thing, because if anyone had said anything to me at all when I first started here that that sort of thing is frowned upon... you know, cause I've worked in a lot of offices, and I tell you, people do that all the time.
