37th Round Selection

Jeremy Martinez

Position: C

Height: 5'11"

Weight: 190 lbs

B/T: R/R

High School: Mater Dei HS (CA)

Hometown: Fountain Valley, CA

Note: Same High School as 36th Round Selection Derek Campbell.

People who watch Martinez hit might do a little bit of a double-take. The Southern California high school standout purposefully has patterned his approach, setup and swing after Albert Pujols. A veteran of Team USA, Martinez has shown an ability to catch some of the better prep arms in the country, grading out with solid catch and throw skills. He has an idea at the plate with some good power from the right side to go along with it. And though there's not much projection and he'll have to watch his conditioning, he should have enough to be an everyday backstop at the next level. In addition to his USA Baseball work in summers past, he has led his Mater Dei team to two straight National High School Invitational championships. That tournament is also held at USA Baseball's complex, making Cary, North Carolina Martinez' home away from home.

Zack Brown

Position: RHP

Height: 6'1"

Weight: 180 lbs

B/T: R/R

DOB: 12/15/94

College: Committed to Kentucky

High School: Seymour

Hometown: Seymour, IN

Brown is a raw 6-foot-1, 170-pound MIF with an athletic build. From shortstop he showcased advanced defensive actions. He shows good range and foot speed to go along with a solid, accurate arm across the infield. At the plate Brown demonstrates an athletic base with quick hands, getting to extension well. He shows the ability to hit for power, but will project to be more of a doubles guy that occasionally hits the ball out of the park. On the mound, he displays a quick arm and projects to add velocity with added strength. Brown showcased a 79-83 mph fastball along with an above average change up (70-74) and a 69- 72 breaking ball.

Summer 2012. Brown blew up on the mound. Brown sat 86-89 most of the summer occasionally pumping up to 92. In a section game he sat 89-91 with a 81-82 plus breaking ball. Very few kids can spin the ball as well as Brown. He is raw still on the mound but is arm is electric.

Tyler Alamo has updated his Twitter profile to "catcher in the Chicago Cubs organization" with a Cubs logo as his profile pic. Awesome. By the way, said it last year and I'll say it again.....Yagyu, at PSD, is the man. He tracks down all the signings. If I mention a signing on here, its because he's tracked it down. We've gotten others in the fold too already, just don't remember who all else. I know he reads over here on occasion, so START POSTING. Again, your work is greatly appreciated.

He has Alamo, Clifton, Blair, Brown, Hermans, Hannemann,

Zastryzny, Wilson, and Burks all but done.

Says Brockmeyer is leaning toward signing, but not ready to declare him.

Wow, some already impressive work by the FO the signing front. I'm digging it.

Twitter stalking Zack Brown, not sure he's signed. He mentioned something today about wanting a guy to follow him to Kentucky, because he loves throwing to him.

The final two BA profiles:

37th rounder Jeremy Martinez (BA rank #226):

Martinez has been a big name in scouting circles since he was in the ninth grade, but scouts say he is much the same player now as he was then. He played for USA Baseball's 16-and-under national team before his sophomore year in 2010, then hit .387/.558/.548 for the 18-and-under team a year later, leading Team USA to a gold medal at the Pan Am Championships in Colombia. In 2012, he helped the 18U team to another gold medal, at the 18U World Championship in South Korea. Martinez is a savvy, polished young catcher, but he lacks loud tools. He handles a pitching staff well, and he's an average receiver with a fringe-average arm. Offensively, he has a contact-oriented approach and projects as a fringe-average hitter. He has flashed raw power at showcases and in batting practice, but it doesn't play in games. He had no home runs in 98 plate appearances this spring, swinging a wood bat. His 5-foot-11, 195-pound frame lacks projection. Martinez is committed to Southern California, and many scouts aren't interested in buying him out of that commitment, but his makeup and track record could prompt a club to take a run at him around the fifth or sixth round.

38th rounder Zack Brown (BA rank #385):

The best high school pitching prospects in Indiana this year are lefthanders. Trey Ball will be a first-round choice, Danny Ayers could go in the top five rounds and Joshua Rogers might have as well before he had Tommy John surgery in April. The top righthander is Brown, who's unlikely to give up his commitment to Kentucky to turn pro. Though he's not big at 6-foot-1 and 175 pounds, he has a quick arm that delivers 87-92 mph fastball and spins quality curveballs. He needs to get stronger to maintain his delivery deeper into games. His high arm slot may not be conducive to better than average command and control.

- Gray/Appel/Bryant were the "Big 3 throughout the spring" in evaluating the #2 options

- Bryant "probably" would have been the pick if they had been at #1, implied Appel was 2nd on that list

- BBCOR bats make it easier to get a true sense of a hitter's hit tool and power, before they had to give more weight to summer/wood leagues. Makes Bryant's power numbers more impressive. Also cited USD's pitcher friendly ballpark and starting to play night games(marine layer) as further evidence of his remarkable power.

- "I believe he can play 3B in the Major Leagues"...."very athletic and very good hands"....cites height and the rarity of 6-5 3B....had many different eyes on him, didn't see any reason he can't be a 3B right now..."very good arm"

- On Zastryzny: No one can pronounce his name in the war room. "strong, physical LHP"...."bulldog mentality"..90-93 with the fastball..."solid average changeup"

- Knew going in they wanted to be pitcher heavy in the top 10. Focused more on college pitchers "with size and stuff who performed in pretty good conferences" this year. Looking for "little older, more advanced college guys who can accelerate their development [more quickly]"

More coming after the break. Parks on shortly after 12:30.

Someone posted a San Diego interview with Hoyer after the first day where he pretty much said they would have went Appel if he was there. Oh well, it's really a moot point anyways.

More McLeod

- On Hannemann: First time he saw live pitching since HS was this January, struggled first 40 ABs like Muskat mentioned then took off...Cites strength, speed, pop, "middle of the field profile"... At conference tourney with Theo & Jed, USD's head coach told them he was the 2nd best player in the conference to Bryant, without Bryant he's an easy #1...."betting on the upside"

- On Baez: "Good learning experience for him"....first true full season of ball..."streakiness" on both offensive and defensive...cites mental lapses, ensuring the focus and concentration is there every PA....hitting a lot of balls very hard recently...enjoyable to watch the live feed of Daytona's home games

- On Soler: "certainly a possibility" Soler might move to AA. Praises his consistent approach and plate discipline....power has come and gone in spurts...cites Soler's first full MiLB season as well, still learning what you need to do to stay mentally sharp every day

- On Almora: Didn't know what to expect, especially after the hamate injury....good to see the doubles as sign of power, "very good defense", gave the team a spurt of energy

- On Vogelbach: "pretty sound approach"...hasn't had the "peaks and valleys", expects a big 2nd half from him

- re: makeup, Bernfield mentions how great Almora and Bryant seem in this regard - "hardest thing for scouts to nail down"....want guys who can extract the most value from themselves on the field, but also handle the pressures/media that come from being hyped picks/prospects in a big market like Chicago....thinks they "hit a home run" makeup-wise with both Almora and Bryant

Parks

- On Bryant's timeline: hard to speculate on the speed of his ascent until you see him against pros/with wood...should be able to move through low levels because of his pedigree, AA will be a true test to his future ceiling and how quickly he can get there

- "Absolutely loved" the Bryant pick...."talent is a commodity", talks about using excess hitting to get pitching if needed(cites Myers/Shields trade)

- Took college heavy draft to be indicative of a commitment to putting a good team on the MLB level soon..."took a lot of, I don't want to say low ceiling guys, but high floor guys"

- On Alcantara: Hasn't done much checking on him, Southern League isn't an easy place to hit, heard mentions from others of his potential, but not sold completely. Able to hit fastballs and breaking balls against RHP, something he looks for in switch hitters since that's what they'll see the most..."he can swing the stick"

I thought I read where Hoyer implied Appel was their first choice. Might've been one of the places they disagreed or maybe they don't have their stories straight. ABTY was suggesting that Bryant was ahead of Appel on our board.
