Really hope it's not Girardi...but I suppose there are hires I would hate a lot more.

If it makes you feel better. If they hire Girardi, it probably signals that they plan to make a big push in the offseason through trades and FA.

Really kinda blase about Girardi; my main concern is that it's their attempt at a big move this offseason to placate the meatballs.

Nah, if they get him, I really do think its to give them more credibility with FA.

Hey, maybe it gets Cano and co. to come down even further than he'll have to from their ridiculous contract expectations.

For some reason, I actually think Cano will be a serious target for us. We need left handed pop long term and it'd free us up to deal Alcantara+ for a young pitcher. It's either that or get Tanaka and trade for a bat. But with 30 mill or so to spend just to keep payroll even to 2013 and enough of a supporting cast to where we don 't need to add short term types.....I really do think we'll add 2 large pieces this offseason.

The posting fee for Tanaka will be at least $30M by itself before you get into his actual contract. I can see Tanaka as the big off-season move if they see him as a potential ace given his age. I don't see them going after Cano, because someone will be dumb enough to give him the 10 year deal he wants.

if they get girardi i would take that as a very good sign for this offseason. i don't think he'd come here unless he felt like the team could be at least decent right away.

I thought that about Epstein. Maybe all the best baseball executives and managers secretly want to be on rebuilding teams with no pressure.

Different situation now and you know that. Tons of payroll flexibility just to get back to the anemic area it's already been at. Enough role players to field a 65-70 win team next year with no additions and a farm system that is definitely top 5 in the game, likely top 3, and arguably first. It may not be time to go bat [expletive] crazy financially, but it's time to make a few big moves. He'll, it even makes sense for Ricketts as they'll want some excitement built in with the TV deal being re-done. I'll go as far as to say I'll be shocked if we do NOT make at least one very big FA signing and I'll be slightly disappointed if it doesn't come with a large trade as well.

It's possible. I'll believe it when I see it.

Certainly fair. And seeing Ricketts drag on with the renovations that could be getting done, definitely is a concern.

I sort of disagree. Obviously the Cubs are building towards something...if Theo sold Girardi on being competitive in 2 years, I think he would buy into it and take his lumps next year. Remember this is the guy who took a garbage Marlins team into Wild Card contention back in 2006, so I think that is part of why Theo may be interested in him.

I can see Girardi melting down and killing someone on a losing team.

The "Go Nuts" scenario...

1) Bring in Girardi to manage

2) Sign Cano (10/$250M - takes slight discount to stay with Girardi)

3) Sign Ellsbury (6/$130 - takes slight discount to play for Theo again)

4) Win bid for Tanaka (6/$50 - with $45M posting fee)

5) Trade Arrieta, Lake, Alcantara, Corey Black for CarGo

6) Baez wins job (with slight delay to start season in AAA)

CF Ellsbury

SS Castro

LF CarGo

2B Cano

3B Baez

1B Rizzo

C Castillo

RF Schierholtz/Righty OF

SP Shark

SP Tanaka

SP Wood

SP Jackson

SP cast of thousands

Late in the year, Bryant comes up as the Righty OF bat and mashes so much he proceeds to take over full time. For the playoffs one of he or Baez slides into the cleanup role to break up the lefties there.

Shockingly, the payroll would still be in line with the $145M peak hit under the trib.

You think we can somehow trade for Carlos Gonzalez without giving up any of our top 7-8 prospects (Baez, Bryant, Soler, almora, alcantara, pierce, cj, adrois)?

Dont agree with giving Ellsbury a huge deal with Almora semi-close. I think Almora is Nomar if he were a center fielder.

Almora hasn't made it to Daytona yet. He has zero bearing on the discussion of what to do with the MLB team in the near future.

Almora is semi-close? Outside of the IFA guys, of prospects of note he is easily the furthest away.

If he starts at Daytona next year, that would put him about 2 seasons away, wouldnt even be halfway through ellsbury's deal.

Two seasons if absolutely everything goes right for him as a prospect.

It's pretty crazybuckets to be passing on good players right now because you think *maybe* you might have another player for that position two years down the road.

Is that even something you *want* to avoid? Having too many good players isn't a bad thing.
