I like this one

Unintended but blessed consequence of Jason Collins’ courageous statement… Muting the Tebowmania.

Gay, straight, I don't care. Just be who you are and let others be who they are.

Yeah I feel this. I don't think it matters much and shouldn't be as big of a story as it is. Just move on and be you. If other people don't like it, then they're entitled to their opinions.

It would be nice if it didn't matter and wasn't a big story. If he was the 778th player to come out that would be the case. But it does matter and it is a big story.

And if other people don't like it they are entitled to their opinion but they are also entitled to know they are horrible human beings.

I understand it would be newsworthy and a bigger deal if it were someone like a Steph Curry, a rising star and young player with a promising future in the league for years to come. Collins doesn't currently have a job and it wouldn't be shocking if he doesn't have one next season averaging 2 pts a game.

I question his motives and timing. That is all.

He's a gay man that for various reasons lived a closeted life and doesn't want to do that anymore. What is there to question? You think he's actually straight but wants the attention?

Absolutely not. I just think its weird because at this juncture in his career, does he have anything to lose by announcing this? What are the chances of a GM going out there and signing this guy to sit in his warm ups all season? There have been retired athletes already who have made this sort of announcement. I'd be curious to see a contracted player make this announcement on a team with a future ahead of him. That to me is more of a story and a pioneer then a dude who's career is likely over. Hence my thought that this isnt much of a story.

The reaction to the story means it is a big story, by definition, so the notion that one "doesn't feel like it is a big story" just does not hold up to any thought. You may not personally care about it, but it is a big story.

Mike Franseca is apparently doing the same thing on his radio show. The guy will talk about television rating of random games and the minutia of freaking horse racing and almost anything else, yet he tries to pretend this isn't a story worth talking about. That's pretty much just a way for him to try and hide his inner bigot.

If you are willing to talk about the stories surrounding sports, and not just the x's/o's and box scores, then this is a story.

Valid point and I appreciate your engagement in a mature discussion. I do feel that ESPN and other news outlets are a hype machine and unfortunately this is going to be the next big thing. I feel like some of the reality of the situation, homosexuals coming out in sports is going to be lost on Mr. Collins. He will be out of a job next season and soon, retired. It will be shocking if a GM is willing to add him to their team and if that does happen, will be a true story.

How does it benefit him at all to come out right before he becomes a FA?

Love that you try to pull this self-righteous garbage after kicking off your contributions to this discussion thusly:

Just move on and be you. If other people don't like it, then they're entitled to their opinions.

AKA Keep it to yourself, and if people want to hate you because of your sexuality, whatever, just be cool about it.

Ironically enough (probably not irony) ESPN has kind of ignored the story since it was their competitor that broke it, and ESPN is all about hyping ESPN branded stories, not the actual news.

Not knowing anything about this player or his ability I do think it would be shocking to some extent if somebody signs him. That is all the more reason not to question his motives and timing.

Metta World Peace's take on the Jason Collins coming out story:

Whether it's a free country or not, you should be free to act as you want to do as long as it's not violent. No matter what it is. I came here in a Cookie Monster shirt because I wanted to, and I was going to wear the pants. But I thought you guys were going to judge me. I was going to wear the hat too. But I thought you guys would judge me. I didn't want Mitch [Kupchak] to judge me. So that's why I didn't wear the hats and the pants. But I should've wore it. You should be free to do and act how you want to act.
