Meatball.

No way, meatball is meatball at this point.

Meathead is way better.

I understand the argument that hustling can get you injured but let's not pretend like it's a bad thing or something either.

It's a good thing when it's called for. It's not a good thing when it's not called for. Like everything, context is key. It does the Nationals no good to have Harper on the DL for going over the railing to catch a foul ball that can't be stabbed with two feet on the ground.

Meathead isn't the same thing as a meatball. It's like thinking Gary Suter is one of the Sutter brothers.

So Dan McNeil, while talking about the Cubs' offensive woes (rightfully so), today said something to the effect of "and Valbuena has been a disaster offensively." Spiegel didn't exactly dispute it in any way, either.

It's pretty awesome that these dudes paid hundreds of thousands of dollars to talk about local Chicago sports are paying attention. Especially when there are like two teams to pay attention to at this point.

Maybe they don't include us as one of those 2 teams to pay attention to at this point. After all bears season starts in like 3 [expletive] months so let's talk about that for [expletive] ever

Hoyer just said he expects to spend on FA this offseason, the kids that are coming need help.

I'm guessing they target Sandoval, Headley, Rasmus and Cabrera

So, driving in today, Spiegel called Mac on this comment. Wonder if one of them saw that post.

Where'd he say this? JW so I can check out the interview.

Judging by the other post on that interview, looks like Kap and Haugh.

davell, do you know when the interview was? Their site appears to break down the audio by the hour, and I don't think any of us want to listen to those guys more than the absolute minimum.

Rizzo currently on pace for 6 fWAR

Starlin currently on pace for 3.1 fWAR

This was tweeted 45 minutes ago, if that helps:

@thekapman: Hoyer on spending in coming winter: “I would say that is likely + definitely possible. We need to add veterans to the kids that are coming."

I don't see them looking at 3B at all. I could see Rasmus or Markakis, plus a Masterson type SP.

Why don't you think they'd target third base?

Baez, Bryant, Alcantara (not that he'd play at 3B, but in the way that if he emerges he could force Baez there)....maybe Villanueva at the fringe of that mix if he figures out how to hit AAA better.

Did anybody catch that exchange between (IIRC) CJ Nitkowski, Brett, and that Mike Ferrin dude in which someone asked if there was a 1B they'd take over Rizzo in the NL this year, and Ferrin said Goldshcmidt once you figure defense?

Mike Ferrin @MikeFerrinSXM · Jun 9

@CJNitkowski Not me. Not when you figure defense into it. I’ll take Goldy all day, twice on Sunday’s and 3 times on alternate Wednesdays.

What an odd thing to say when Rizzo might be the best defensive 1B in baseball (am I missing someone?)

Mike Ferrin @MikeFerrinSXM · Jun 9

@Boost3383 @BleacherNation @CJNitkowski you haven't watched Goldy then.

I'm pretty sure Rizzo has graded out better too.

I mean, it's good company to be in...just really struck me as a strange thing to say.

Valbuena is also currently outproducing Sandoval and Headley combined. Partially due to a chunk of his playing time being at 2B, but it still makes the point.

Completely intended to bring him up and I just forgot to. Derp.

I don't really see any of those guys as viable at 3B long-term, except Baez (and the front office seems to prefer him at 2B).

Between Baez, Bryant, and Valbuena (not to mention the added possibility of Alcantara pushing Baez to 3B by locking up 2B himself) it would make little sense to allocate a bunch of resources to that position. You may not think Bryant is viable long term, but all of those possibilities have non-zero chances of happening...in fact, I'd argue that it's pretty likely that one of them plays out and 3B is occupied.

At the very least there's some chance that Bryant or Baez are a 3B long term, and a pretty high chance that they let Bryant prove he can't handle 3rd before moving him to the OF(remember Braun played 100+ games there his rookie season). Add in that Valbuena has been one of the better 3B in the game this year, there's larger needs in the OF and potentially in the rotation, and there are only so many dollars available to spend, and I'd be very surprised if they spent any real money on the infield this offseason.
