Sounds like the high school version of Trea Turner....

Gordon doesn't need the swing overhaul Turner does. And Gordon has a better arm and sounds like the better defender.

I really hope the Lindor comp is legit because I love him as a prospect, but it's really scary taking a guy at 4 whose bat upside is fairly minimal.

This top of this draft is crap; neither Aiken nor the 2014 version of Rodon would go ahead of any of the top 3 from last year.

At one point though last year wasnt there people saying Rodon would have gone number 1 in last years draft. I was reading he was a pretty healthy notch above Gray and Appel.

If he had been eligible last year, Rodon could very well have gone first. Or fourth. But he would have been in that top group of three for certain.

Yeah, he was a viable candidate for 1.1 last year, which is why I had to qualify my post by saying the 2014 version of Rodon.

Knew I was forgetting a couple guys.

That is pretty close to my board, but I'd probably go like this right now with the top 4 being close to interchangeable:

Jackson

Schwarber

Pentecost

Conforto

Aiken

Gordon

Zimmer

Nola

Freeland

Hoffman

Rodon

Schwarber has been added to my list of guys I'd be really happy with. Schwarber, Aiken, Pentecost, Jackson, Nola, in no particular order, except Nola being last.

@MDGonzales: Cubs have cut list of candidates for 4th overall pick to six. Three-hour debate on candidates today, GM Hoyer said.

what do people here think the likelihood actually is that Aiken or Rodon is actually available at 4? I say 0% for Aiken and maybe 20% for Rodon. assuming they're gone and reports are true that Cubs will not draft Jackson or Kolek, what's your board?

I don't think it's 0% on Aiken, maybe 20%. For him to fall, Luhnow needs to get scared of taking another pitcher at 1, when there's serious concerns with his last one. And this time, it's a HS kid, to boot. They could take Rodon(further along in dev anyway) or take a bat at a huge discount. Either way, my guess is Jackson or Kolek goes 2 here in this scenario. White Sox take Rodon or Nola.....Aiken's there at 4.

Rodon is more feasible. Aiken, Jackson, Kolek or Nola and Rodon is available.

I'm guessing Aiken, Rodon, Gordon, Schwarber, Conforto, Pentecost.

Can someone make me feel better about Rodon and provide me an example of a pitcher who had the label high risk to injury troubles who turned out to be healthy and good?

My preferences.....(changes all the time, but I'm trying to stick to this)

Rodon at slot plus 5%

Aiken at slot plus 5%

Nola at slot - 1 mill

Hoffman at 3 mill or under

Jackson at slot

Schwarber, Pentecost, or Conforto at 3 mill or under

Gordon at slot -500k

Options 3-7 are close to interchangeable. And no, I don't think Hoffman is a legit candidate for the FO.

My guess at the FO's 6 are Aiken, Rodon, Pentecost, Schwarber, Conforto, and Nola.

Why are people now putting Schwarber on their personal top list. Is it only because our FO is rumored in on him? Someone sell me on this guy. So he's a very very bad defender. It's kinda like getting a college Vogelbach or is he just that much better of a hitter? For me to be comfortable with him (on top of severe underslot) he just has to be an insanely good hitter. I mean like low KO and high BB guy with great bat speed, high contact rate, insane power, all that stuff. In other words, he has to be a waaaaay better hitter than Vogelbach.

Is he?

Is he?

First off, he is way more athletic than Vogelbach.

He has the best left handed power in the draft and is the best college power bat in the draft period.

He has an advanced approach and good hit tool.

What turned me on him as hearing that he may have a slim chance to stick behind the plate, but should be okay in LF (though never great) through his prime years.

Agreed. The scouting reports (posted in this thread) make him out to be athletic enough to handle LF. Honestly, the reports on his D sound as good as Conforto - if not better - and it sounds like his approach is great.

Sharma says if Aiken/Rodon gone(likely), then Conforto/Gordon are top guys, with Schwarber/Pentecost in the mix. Jackson/Nola are out.

Edit: Says Kolek still in discussion, but on outskirts, like Schwarber/Pentecost.

I think Schwarber is capable of being the type if hitter that Rizzo is in 2014. Decent average, very strong obp, not an awful k rate, 30 homer power. As a college hitter he could be ready within 2 years.

I like Kiley McDaniel's idea of having him catch once a week and play LF the rest of the time, if he proves capable. It would be a nice bonus to not have to use a roster spot on a garbage backup catcher like every team does.

His defense adds some risk, but the upside is worthy of the #4 pick in this draft.

@pgammo: Astros thought process will go to 5 pm Thursday, like last year, so don't draw conclusions from Nolan Ryan-Tyler Kolek meeting Tuesday

@sahadevsharma: Appears Kolek is still in the discussion as well, but I get the feeling he's on the outskirts like Pentecost and Schwarber.

@kileymcd: The best draft dope comes in the next 18 hrs starting now as meetings are breaking for the night. Lots of buzz that Kolek is sliding.

@kileymcd: To give you an idea, a crosschecker gave me his mock top 11. Includes Schwarber at 4, Beede at 10, no Kolek in top 11. It's getting wacky.

Pentecost, Gordon or Nola. I am ok with any of these 3 guys. I refuse to believe that tweet that lumped Conforto and Gordon together. Gordon easy by far in that scenario.
