SI suggests the Bears might be a team that could trade up on draft day:

Chicago Bears (No. 20)

Target Player: G Jonathan Cooper

Where He’s Expected to Go: Top 20

The Bears hold the final selection in the top 20, so one of the draft’s two elite guards — Chance Warmack or Cooper — could fall into their laps. However, for a team that’s badly in need of an upgrade on the O-line, there will be some nervous moments should one of those two (likely Warmack) hear his name called early.

Chicago doesn’t figure to put all its chips on the table to move up a few spots, but a swap with, say, Miami at 12 or Carolina at 14 could be mutually beneficial.

FWIW, the Bears were one of 2 teams that didn't go to North Carolina's pro day. Of course, they haven't really shown their hand very much other than everyone knew they were going DE last year. I think they will continue to play things close to the vest, as I believe that Bruce Irvin was their target last year and Seattle jumped the gun on him, knowing he wouldn't last past the Bears pick (just a theory I have).

For the record, the Bears now have 70 players on the camp roster (55 regulars, 15 on future's contracts). Of those 70 players, 40 are not under contract at the end of the 2013 season. That 40 FAs include 7 current projected starters on D. Only 4 projected starters on offense are UFAs, but they happen to be 3 members of what looks to be a solid revamped OL and most importantly, Jay Cutler.

Ironically, every single CB on the roster is without a contract past this year. But the only WR not under contract is not even a WR anymore according to the coaches (Hester).

we have our quarterback, we'll have his receivers, and we'll have his line. that's all i care about at this point. i understand cutler is a FA, but he's also franchiseable.

Trade up to get Fisher.

Looks like the Bears should easily re-up Slauson, though:

@seankjensen: Matt Slauson said #Jets tried to keep him but #Bears offered him more money and better "long-term thing." http://bit.ly/10kKAn2

@seankjensen: To be clear: Matt Slauson will sign 1-year deal with #Bears. But #Bears obviously gave him impression could turn into long-term opportunity.

I know absolutely nothing about this guy. Has anyone seen much of him? Have an opinion?

At this point, I'm thinking we're done in FA. At least until after the draft. It's wide-ass open as to what we could do in the 1st round though. The only positions I think we are positively not going to address with our 1st pick are Center, Running Back, and Safety. I hate saying it, but even QB could be in play, I guess. TE is still conceivable as well, although unlikely. I think WR does get addressed within our top 3 picks, possibly O-Line does as well. With one of DE, DT, LB, or CB, likely being our 1st round pick. Really hoping for a trade down more than ever though.

I will be pleased if the Bears take anything in the first round other than a RB, QB or TE. TE to me is inconceivable at this point. We just signed a 26 year old TE who can catch and block. Ridiculous to even mess with the idea.

I agree, but who knows, maybe they want a Gronkowski/Hernandez type combo? A stretch obviously and I doubt they go that route, but stranger things have happened. The main thing I don't want to see is us take Barkley or some other QB early. I want to see the first 3-4 picks all be possible contributors from Day 1. Unless we get Jones, who seems like he'd be a good fit and worth the wait for the longterm.

I kind of disagree on center just because some view Cooper as able to play center, but interior line spots can be filled in the mid round so even if Cooper dropped you could just see a trade down or other pick I guess.

One interesting position the Bears could take in the 1st round is DT. Melton's still a FA after this year. Paea hasn't done a ton, and the only other DT on the roster is Nate Collins, who's also a FA after the year (maybe be RFA, not sure). DT is probably the biggest need left, in the sense that you need someone in the rotation right away. Every position has starters the Bears can "get by" with and a serviceable backup or 2. Guys like Kawaan Short, Jonathan Hankins (hope not), and Sylvester Williams could be in play if the Bears trade down. I think there will be a better player at another position if they stay at 20, though.

Drafting qb in first round would be preposterous. There isn't one worth taking in the first on his own merit and it would completely negate everything they did in free agency. They need impact guys on day 1 and 2 who can contribute today. Not the next mark Sanchez.

Definitely wouldn't be opposed to it. It will be interesting to see hiw the furst 19 picks shake out.

I think San Fran is our ideal trade part, if we move back. They've got 11 picks, starting with 1-31. They also have 2-2, 2-29, 3-12, and 3-31.

San Fran is gonna be everyone's ideal trade partner.

If we're mapping out an ideal situation for a trade down, two QBs go top seven. Buffalo doesn't go QB at 8 and tries to trade back up. Get a 2,3 and maybe a late rounder. Nog sure on the exact value chart, but should be close.

The hot name to trade up for us going to be Desmond Trufant. Atlanta and SF are potential trade partners for him as CB is both team's biggest needs and he'd be the best on the board by far at 20 without having to reach. Niners have the ammo to trade up but Falcons have the history of aggressiveness on draft day.

Thought I read somewhere that Buffalo was hot on Geno.

Let the coaching, begin!

In an effort directed by first-year head coach Marc Trestman to build team unity, players' lockers have been randomly moved around, mixing members of the offense with their counterparts on defense. Previously, lockers were arranged by position group.
