The Red Sox can afford to overspend to get their guy after dumping Beckett, Gonzalez, and Crawford. Before the Napoli signing they were $100+ million under their 2012 opening day salary. They can afford to be a little stupid

Reynolds is a complete butcher in the field. With Keppinger we at least have the option of an eventual platoon.

Totally fair, as he definitely is. I just don't wanna see Keppinger at age 35, I suppose. Plus, having some power around is always fun at least. Gotta sell those shirseys.

New post for Insiders - the Red Sox give $13 million a year to a platoon outfielder: http://klaw.me/WHShlB

Shane Victorino's three-year, $39 million contract with the Boston Red Sox vaults to the top of the ranking of the worst contracts signed so far this offseason, giving him virtually the same total dollars that Angel Pagan -- a superior player -- will receive in a contract that's a year longer.

The Sox have now squandered a substantial amount of the payroll flexibility they obtained over the summer when they traded Adrian Gonzalez to the Los Angeles Dodgers just to rid themselves of two awful contracts, yet they have little to show for their recent spending spree.

Where is Swisher going to wind up? Red Sox were interested in him, doubt they are anymore the Yankees don't seem to want him back. Wouldn't mind him for RF, depending on his contract demands. Though a Soriano/Dejesus/Swisher OF would leave quite a bit to be desired defensively. But that's why you keep a guy like Campana/Sappelt around for late inning defense I guess.

Keppingers career OBP/SLG is .337/.396

Reynolds was at .335/.429 last year. .332/.475 for his career.

Reynolds power is the only advantage he has. And that took a bit of a dip last year.

Keppinger is actually capable of playing defense, will likely require less of a commitment, and would be easier to keep around in a platoon or utility role should we find a better option at 3B later.

he's going to get a lot

I have literally heard nothing about what he's asking/who's interested, has anyone else on here? Guess he's waiting for Hamilton/Bourn to sign to be a fall back option? Two teams that made sense to get him already got their guy (ATL and SF). Maybe he's the fall back plan for Texas if they don't bring Hamilton back?

SOSH is pretty suicidal over this one. His fWAR is weird, because when you start to break it down it sure seems like he sucks.

this post made me feel great

Increasingly it's looking like the creativity and ingenuity that was a hallmark of the front office between 2003 and 2011 departed with Theo Epstein (and Josh Byrne and Peter Woodfork and Jed Hoyer). I hate to say this, because he seems like a decent guy, but Ben Cherington doesn't appear to be more than a replacement-level GM.

I'm jealous I didn't think of it first!

I get 99.9% of my news on this site, but I've seen no rumors on Demp... Seems weird.

Saw something today that he had a couple of 2-year deals on the table and was holding out for three.

Jon Heyman @JonHeymanCBS

#brewers seem like logical fit for dempster. has home in chicago, wants to train in ariz. #redsox in. #angels dropped out.

Mark reynolds has nice market. Cubs, nyy, cle, miami, sea, balt, tb, plus

Not sure how I feel about that.

Jon Heyman @JonHeymanCBS

Keppinger said looking for close $12M plus for 3 yrs. Had nice year in tampa. Nyy likes. #fibula

LOL

Honestly, I'd be OK with both Reynolds and Keppinger(even at 3-12)

I'd be better with Ian Stewart at whatever he would have made via arb.

Some late night action...

@DKnobler Rays close to deal for Yunel Escobar. Derek Dietrich goes to Marlins

Jim Duquette @Jim_Duquette

Ludwick deal with Cincinnati is likely 2 @ 14 mil

I'm admittedly growing more and more curious as to how the front office plans to fill third base next season...

Jeff Passan @JeffPassan

Source says Marlins were "panicked" to get rid of Yunel Escobar and did so to Rays for Derek Dietrich, as @DKnobler first reported.

Man they really sound like they know what they're doing in Miami...

Pretty much. Or Stewart reprises.

I'm much more curious how they plan to fill an entire outfield.

I'd actually much prefer Stewart.

I wonder what it would take to get Ellsbury.

He's older than I thought. Time flies.

Valbuena was league average. I'm not sure we can count on Stewart for that (although, I suppose we can't really count on Valbuena for that, but he did nothing out of the ordinary and much of his value was defensive).

Brett Taylor @BleacherNation

Wouldn't hate the Cubs giving him that sixth year. RT @jonmorosi Anibal Sanchez has multiple five-year offers, source says.
