I mean...I guess 14th in MLB is above average.

Not necessarily.

It's above median, though!

Which can technically be called the average.

if you want to be technically wrong

If you have ever taken a statistics class, you should know that the mean, mode, and median can all be technically called the "average."

The mean is just what has become most associated with the word. If you want to be a smart ass, you should at least make sure you are right.

I've taught statistics to undergrads and grad students. You are dead wrong and can leave the thread now. Probably best to not post for some time too.

LOL, A) I am directly quoting my own professor who is Ivy League educated, and B) if you want to just google the word "average," what I said comes up almost immediately.

av·er·age

ˈav(ə)rij/Submit

noun

1.

the result obtained by adding several quantities together and then dividing this total by the number of quantities; the mean.

"the housing prices there are twice the national average"

synonyms: mean, median, mode; More

As I said, "mean" is the generally used definition of average, but the mode and medians are still technically "averages."

Probably best to not post for some time too.

Or not, and you guys can stop embarrassing yourselves.

Your professor is a moron if he told you that and google is not a source.

Mode is the most frequent value

Median is the exact middle value

Mean is the statistical average.

Bye bye now.

Wow, you really think this is about not understanding the difference between mode, median, and mean? I'm definitely not suggesting that the mean and median are the same thing. This is about you guys not understanding the definition of an english word.

ETA: M-W has them listed as synonyms as well. Is that not a valid source either? You know better than the dictionary?

This is laughable.

Also yeah, my teacher who got his PhD from Columbia and is a professor at NYU is an idiot, you're right.

ETA2: Also, just because you are being a dick, If you really want I can email you copies of my perfect score on the math section of both the SAT and ACT to prove I understand the concepts of mean, median, and mode.

LOL, this is all dumb anyway because it was meant as a throw away comment at the end of a couple joke posts. No need for it to turn into a really dumb argument (I am guilty of allowing it to become that though).

And you're still wrong.

Based on your opinion? What facts back that up? The facts say I'm right.

Straight from Merriam-Webster:

Full Definition of AVERAGE

1

a : a single value (as a mean, mode, or median) that summarizes or represents the general significance of a set of unequal values

Christ, can we end this now? I've proved myself right many times now and you guys just keep saying no without anything to back it up. I understand the damn difference. I also understand that when people say "average" they are referring to the mean. The whole nature of the initial exchange was playful and obnoxious, so I added an (accurate) obnoxious comment of my own. That is the end. There is nothing else to this.

He's not wrong. Just because when you were taught mean-median-mode your lazy teacher told you mean = average doesn't mean that mode and median aren't also technically averages.

I can't decide if it's crazier that this discussion went on for 3 pages or that the guy who taught stats doesn't understand this fairly simple point (his smug attitude was sadly not surprising).

While it wasn't necessary, I do appreciate the NSBB Avengers coming to my defense. Thanks guys.

Now can we get this thread back on track?

ETA: I'm applying for the copyright to the NSBB Avengers, so nobody think about stealing it. Kyle as Tony Stark seems like a good place to start the casting.

Early favorite for Loki is imb! Easily the best trouble maker on this site, and asking me if he could have sex with my sister definitely helped his cause.

If I had known it would cause people to be nice to me, I would have encouraged my wife to whore it up years ago.

It'd be a TM and it'd get refused.

At this point, I think we're gonna need proof so we know you didn't make up this story for the sake of popularity.

Well damn, we can make a knock-off. You guys get producer creds for being the inspiration.

Despite what some of my posts to you have said in the past, I've always been a fan of you as a poster. You get on some people's nerves but you have a lot of good things to say.
